Does anyone know if any suspensions were given out to Paraguay for the post game melee with Venezuela?
I just want to compliment all who are involved in putting this preview of the final of Copa America on the main page of the Soccer heading on this website. You obviously appreciate football and respect all countries and leagues who participate in the game. In addition I think you’re very objective in your opintions and critiques of games and /or teams, which is the way journalism should be.
I was shcoked that the Gobe and Mail, the Star and the Sun had NONE if so very little, of the preview of the final, in spite that we are 1 day away, and that today is the 3rd place game. The globe had articles of every other kind of league, championship, but nothing of Copa America. They obviously do not respect or know anything meaningful about football, they just post whatever suits their economic gains-that is the European teams and leagues. Shameful.
Word zazenh … at the end of the day, sports journalism is still about customers (ie. viewers, listeners, readers) and theScore has a new customer in me thanks to their coverage of the Copa. I’ve also spread the word to MANY friends who have been visiting thescore.com to track La Copa America. The other bozos missed out … good riddance to them!
nonickname … I believe just Paraguay’s DT won’t be on the sidelines. The player that got redcarded during the game (Santana?) will also miss it, but no one else as a result of the melee.
Right on Diego! Enjoy the final, I certainly will!
Zazenh… I completely agree with you on The Dope and Fail paper and the others you mentioned being pathetic for not covering the tourny; but honestly, are we that shocked? For the most part, Canadian sports news coverage has been average at best for every sport that is not hockey. They still report minor deals for hockey in July before they report baseball or footy scores.
These so-called reporters have air time on TSN and Sportsnet on the weekend and radio talk shows, making themselves feel like the big time. However, if you actually listen to what they are reporting, do they even know what they are talking about? Nope! My 12 year old commentates on games better than they do. It’s especially brutal watching / listening to the Sportsnet radio show and watching old crusty men who clearly never played any of the sports they are talking about try to explain what matters to Canadian sports fans. When you make Gerry Dobsin and Craig Forrest look like Footy Gods because everyone else on your channel is completely incoherent, you are in trouble.
The fact is Canadian sports is an old man’s club where if you are “in” you are supposedly relevant. Soccer, as old as the game is, is not part of that club and are not “in” because the old farts don’t understand anything not involving rubber objects (insert joke here). If you expect any Canadian sports newsperson (besides the Score) giving the proper respect to all sports, including soccer, you will be waiting a very long time.
Sorry for the rant, but I dare anyone to prove me wrong.
In honour of the final today it might be nice if those associated with the broadcast, Sharman, Jack and Dunlop, would actually pronounce Uruguay properly. Make the effort.
