James Sharman sits down with Toronto FC midfielder Julian De Guzman who has some very interesting news regarding his Champions League playing brother, Jonathan.

That would be huge for Canada’s qualifying hopes. I’d prefer Hoilett though but wouldnt hurt to get both ;)
WOW this is the greatest potential news for Canada football in a longggg time!! :)
Please be true…Please be true
I hope this happens, but I fear being let down.
This would be awesome if this happens. Him and Hoilett could be game changers.
Unbelievable, please be true!! Every day I hope these players realize what they can do with Canada
COME ON JONO!!!! Get your ass back home
hold on hold on, are you actually the guy that called Sharman me?
Yup hahah, pretty hazy I lost my scarf too
This guy is a footy show legend now. Right up there with Lucas Punkari and Pompey Canuck
I’m a Footy Show legend now? What an honour.
Also give the Shunners man a medal right now!
I can’t imagine the chemistry those two would have in the middle of the park. Ok, here’s the formation I picture for the attack (the defence is still a huge mystery):
Jackson
Simpson De Rosario
Jon. De Guzman
Hutchinson Jul. De Guzman
Just replace De Rosario with Hoilett and we are good.
I’ll believe it when I see it, but it would be wonderful if true; doubly wonderful if he gets Junior to play along with him.
I’m gonna go put my Canadian jersey on, play Adele, and weep over a photo shopped picture of JDG2 and Hoilett playing for Canada
I feel like it would be appropriate whether this is true or not
Aki – what a great comment you meade me laugh, please post the photo shopped pic somewhere haha. Dont get your kit to wet either.
Fingers crossed on that one!
I just peed my pants a little!
You mean you squeezed out a trickle in anticipation for the 9-9-9 Herman Rain Canada will be spitting on Panama and Honduras in the next round?
This is good, I’m liking the thought, but it must have always been his second choice to join the Canadian National Team. Lets see and then get excited about it.
BTW, does anyone know if we can get Jacob Lensky to come back to Canada?
PS: I think we can safely go with a 4-3-2-1 in the second round with Friend as our 1 Striker and JDG2 and Peters/Hume (Hoilett, if he doesnt play for Jamaica) as our attacking duo in midfield.
Lensky is on a hiatus to deal with alcohol issues.
WE are all glad you asked him AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this. is. HUGE!!!!
thanks for this james
I would caution anyone from getting too excited, especially about Junior Hoilett, but if it does happen it would be great news.
The next qualifying round is crucial for Canada and both these players could only help.
This is Awesome! I am really looking forward to the next round now. With Atiba back, plus JDG2 & Hoilett, wow look out Brazil here we come!
Also this news is the perfect tonic for finding out that Pompey are almost certain to be deducted points.
“I was actually talking to some close friends about this situation, then again Im 24 years old and I made my decision in 2008 about playing for Holland and I haven’t got the senior callup and then again I have a passport and don’t have a Canadian passport but then again if there is a chance of getting that passport again then I’ll rethink that thought again of course”.
From Beyond the Pitch pod that is what JDG2 had to say about his international future a few days back. With that in mind this seems even more likely
I might to got the next Canada game with a poster of James Sharman! Thanks for posting this, Was this news on anyother sports channel? If not its sad the the one who has Canada soccer broadcasting rights would not have news like this on. Love the Footy Show and it’s podcast by the way.
So conflicted over this one at the moment. He went off to try and play for another national team, albeit after having lived in the country for half his life, and is now deciding it might be best for him to come play with us. Do you look a gift horse in the mouth in this case?
OMFG… YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Canada with Hoilett and JDG2 would be a CONCACAF power, young and exciting. Add to the mix Simpson, Hutchinson, JDG, Jackson, Johnson, etc… *chills*.
Mexico and USA watch out – I’m not even kidding!
:D
UNBELIEVABLE, this changes everything
I have the weirdest boner
Fucking hilarious.
(not said in jest)
LMFAO
I almost spat out my coffee
This is possibly the best news the men’s program could ever receive. This would also lay the groundwork for future players choosing to opt for Canada instead of other nations. A single tear of joy has just run down my cheek.
A lot of people have mentioned Hoilett playing for Canada here. Is there any new information on that front? Has he, or someone around him, said that he is leaning one way or another?
wow never seen so many comments
You know what? forget the past for a second, you get one serious player on board and then it makes the other one much more likely.
Then we’re really cooking.
Make it happen
If either or both of Junior or JDG2 are reading this…..and they’re still undecided….just do it. The time is now! #CMNT Thank you @jamessharman
What a midfield that could be, it surely would move Canada into at least the top 3 in CONCACAF at that position. If they could get some goals out of Jackson & Friend (which would be more likely with better service from the midfield), the defense just has to avoid being a shambolic mess and they would be favorites to qualify………great stuff James.
FInally some good news regarding some possible additions. Let’s hope it happens
F—- ME!…..
.
Before you get all mushy about what one brother thinks another might do, these guys actually got Jonathan on the phone and asked him the question just before the Malaga game the other day … don’t get too worked up

I thought his response was quite positive towards joining Canada. He seemed more concerned about not getting his Canadian passport back. It’s no where near as negative as your comment implied.
Canada needs to do business right now, De Guzmans strong performances in Villareal has alarmed Dutch National Coach Bert van Marwijk. And he’s worked with De Guzman at Feyenoord, so he knows what he can do.
Canada is only lucky to have a player of this caliber available for the Canadian team. But get him now of Holland wil!
Btw, Lensky is available, don’t know if he wants to (but he has played for Canada’s junior teams). But the Czech national team is not so strong, so his choice for Canada shouldn’t be too hard. And he hasn’t had a call-up from them.
The only thing is, he’s currently recovering from an alcohol-abuse-treatment…
@Anton… you can switch nations before being cap-tied, but I think you can only do it once, so because Lensky’s got a U21 cap for them he’s gone as far as Canada’s concerned.
I smell a conspiracy here… Anonymous threatened to take down the internet, or some other miraculous Machiavellian move, if police moved in on Occupy Toronto.
Lo and behold, the police cleared the hippies out and now this news comes out?!
If anything is going to bring the message boards and twitterverse down, it’s stuff like this.
Well done, :)
Let’s not get carried away people. How many times have we been jerked around only to end up disappointed & bitter? Do I wanna believe? Yes very much, but i’ll only get excited about it if/when it becomes official
not ‘avin it. Until the cap is on i refuse to get jerked around as with so many others…….
Okay, that’s bullsh!t. some heartening news there for sure.
As for JDG2 trying to play for Holland instead of us and then choosing us when he didn’t get the call I really have no problem with that. We aren’t Holland and trying to win the WC. We are just trying to qualify so a Dutch cast off is nothing to sneeze at. If you had the choice and lived there your entire adult life then Holland is an easy peasy choice. But if that isn’t working out for you then if you can get in with another country then the World stage experience is worth the move.
so many conflicting thoughts……might need therapy after this one. Any Shrinks specializing in Jerked-Around-CMNT Disorder?
So pumped about this news! Canadian soccer fans deserve this.
ur guys are real jokers, the only reason he is giving in to playing got Canada is because he has finally realized that he has no chance of playing for the Netherlands because he does not posses the skill and knowledge to compete with the world class starts the dutch team has to choose from and is resorting to Canada as a last resort. Since he has failed to reach his goal ( which was shooting for the starts if you ask me) to play for the Dutch notional team he had no option to come back and you people are taking him in with open arms like a desperate and spiritless country would. i would suggest improving your youth systems and and the unenthusiastic attitude in the locker room…( don’t pretend its not there )
I wondered what the big deal was in getting his passport. I assumed that a birth certificate and 2 photos would be sufficient. I did some research and found that Holland does not allow dual citizenship and requires naturalized citizens to renounce their previous citizenship. He may not be eligible to play for Canada anymore and that is why he is concerned about his passport. I know the Philippines would love to have him.
