Van Persie begins trolling

After taking advice equaled in its idiocy only by Maverick Carter’s ‘The Decision’, it appears Robin van Persie’s departure from Arsenal may not be certain after all.

Last week van Persie released a statement on his personal website stating he wouldn’t seek out or sign another contract with the Gunners. Gooners cried, poorly written goodbyes were penned and some managed to create greatness while enduring the pain. Sky Sports says hold the phone:

Sources suggest the situation could yet be resolved with echoes of Wayne Rooney’s transfer request that preceded his signing of a bumper deal with Manchester United in 2010. Van Persie has already stated he loves Arsenal and that he will have further talks with Ivan Gazidis when the club’s chief executive returns from holiday.

Put simply the market for RvP right now doesn’t appear to be strong. PSG aren’t interested, Arsenal doesn’t have to accept the low ball offers from City and Juventus. Might as well hear what Gazidis and Wenger has to say before contemplating his next move. Tell us more:

This raises the intriguing possibility that Van Persie’s personal announcement that so displeased Arsenal was partly used as an act of brinkmanship ahead of further negotiations.

Sounds about right. If he comes back – 60/40 he does – the infamous website statement will be forgotten as soon the Dutchman scores. We saw it with Tevez at City and van Persie hasn’t acted that terribly. This saga better end soon.

Update: At around 2 pm EST Sky took down the article. We’ll keep you posted as things develop.

  1. I think the damage is already done, very difficult for him to come back. As much I’d like to see him stay, he’s only been excellent for 1.5 out of 8 Arsenal seasons.

  2. Sky took down the article. Odd.

    • Very odd.

      • Sky Sports take down the article? Must have just been a ploy by the betting shops to get some more money. If he stays it just means the deal with Barcelona he was expecting isn’t happening.

  3. The gunners stuck by him when he was injured most of the time, so it’s particularly sad.

Let’s be honest, he had ONE good year. He’s not that prolific a goal scorer, 96 goals in 8 years isn’t THAT incredible. Let him go, get somebody that will perform more consistently.

  4. He will be gone im sure of it. RVP is not bigger than the club and if he think so, he will have lost his possible legend status before he earnt it, what a PLONKER he is for saying what he did, he will never be the same in another football clubs shirt, FACT………..

    • RvP will never be the same in another football shirt agreed nor he will never get legend status at the club. He is no where near the likes of Ljungberg, Wright, Henry and Pires.

  5. faberge egg man is excellent when he’s on the field

  6. It would be nice for RVP to allow foundation of the house bev ery strong before putting other structures.

  7. His statement always read as a bargaining chip to me, just one that had a tin ear to how it would be received from the supporters. He specifically mentions further talks with Gazidis in the statement. He seemed to think that an appeal for further investments to win trophies would appeal to the base, when it appears to have alienated them. Anyone who is saying they would not welcome him back into the fold places far too much importance in what is said in a press release (which he likely did not author) and far too little on his talent and role in the team.
