FOX statement confirms Premier League has decided to go with different media partner for 2013-16. Had bid with ESPN. Surprising.

This doesn’t mean much for us in Canadia perhaps, but the rumours are that beIN Sport are planning to run away with the whole thing, pending whatever NBCU has up their sleeve. Fox, as Grant Wahl points out, still have significant foothold in some very durable properties, but ESPN? For all their work and investment, have been left with nothing.
As for the Premier League, it’s clear all they want is their giant bag of money. beIN Sport still has the potential to be a) a professional operation and b) watchable, and hopefully will be by the time their deal with the Premier League kicks in. Otherwise, I’m with you my American brothers and sisters.

Sports Business Journal is reporting that NBC will pay EPL $83 million a year for the rights.
Fox currently pays $23 million.
This doesn’t mean much for us in Canadia yet, but once Sportsnet’s rights end, who’s to say BeIn doesn’t come in and swoop them up?
If the EPL just wants the scratch, I’m sure they don’t give a shit BeIn doesn’t even have a channel here. Serie A sure as hell didn’t.
I hope sportsnet does lose the TV rights here in canada hopefully TSN makes a pitch for it. cuz I’m sick and tired of them putting the marque matchups on Sportsnet World(like Manu vs Chelsea this weekend) which cost like $18 a month, when you only get about 2-4 hours worth of good live material on that channel. I’m surprised they havent put the best matchups for champions league on that channel yet…
Sportsnet losing the EPL rights to TSN would be awful for Premier League fans in this country. If you think TSN would come close to offering the coverage sportsnet provides you’ll be in for a shock. TSN cares about 1 sport: Hockey. everything else on that channel is treated as 2nd rate. Sportsnet does a fantastic job covering the league and yes i know Sportsnet World is kinda pricy, but its honestly the best 18 bucks I spend each month. It’s worth it for the extra 10am est game on saturdays and the usualy double ehader coverage on Sundays.
Absolutely insane $$$ for a league which has at best two good games a week… and yet we are stuck with GolTV for a few measly Bundesliga games!
The absence of Serie A is killing me as well…
Soccer was the only socialy redeemiing thing FOX had. They will continue their downward spiral into the sewers. The whole FOX network has so jumped the shark espousing Murdoch’s political malfeasence. This is not only good for the sport…it is great day for America. Thanks and congratulations BEIN and NBC for putting it to FOX. Having the beautiful game on that poor excuse of a network was insulting. This is great. By the time FOX’s cuo events come to play…The US could be a world football power.
