Manchester United v Swansea City - Premier League

A few things before we close a historic chapter at Old Trafford.

1) This Gary Neville-Paul Scholes interview is fantastic.

2) Rio Ferdinand’s game winning goal capped a joyous yet somber occasion. It was Rio’s first goal since 2008, a staggering amount of a time until you remember this is Rio Ferdinand we’re talking about. Ferdinand became United’s 20th different scorer this season.

3) Normally, I’m a cynical fool who looks down on sentimental goodbyes. Today was different. As many have pointed out, one part of Ferguson’s post-match speech to the supporters stood out: give the new guy a chance. This isn’t David Moyes’ first rodeo, but Manchester United is a different beast. There will be bad times. When they come it will be interesting to see how United’s fans react.

We end with some choice photos from today’s farewell. I’m off to write a 1,500 word column on the Rooney-Ferguson hug and its implications on the civil war in Syria.

  1. As I posted moments ago on the previous, er, post, Sir Alex revealed that Rooney did ask for a transfer but the club has refused his request. He said Wayne had been upset with being substituted on numerous occasions, but that those were because he was not in form. Also, it was Rooney himself that decided he was not going to play today.

    • This will end well.

      • I know, right? It’s not like the new gaffer won a court case for a half million pounds or anything. Personally, having heard how eloquently Wayne speaks english, I’m hoping for PSG- which Ron Atkinson today called, “a travelling circus that’s not a proper football squad and will never do anything in the Champion’s League.” (Minorly paraphrased)

        • Is Ron Atkinson the guy Fergie succeeded? What would he know about the Champions League? PSG went further than Utd. did in this year’s competition, so…

          • Yes, he is. He probably knows more about it than either of us. Neither team is in the finals, so I’ll call it equal. I just thought it was worth a laugh.

  2. and Ronaldo is the cry baby ? over rated!

  3. Say what?! Leafs in 7!!!

  4. Brilliant interview with Schoales What a refreshing attitiude after all the agreesive self-promotion of so manys professional footballers
