“Progressive” Field (OK… actually, it’s from old Municipal Stadium, but who’s counting?)

Here we go folks, the Jays on Opening Day at beautiful Progressive Field in not-so-beautiful Cleveland, against the not-so-progressively-named Indians.

I’d elaborate, but you all know what’s going on. Besides, what was I gonna do, have this damn thing setup before I rushed out the door to go to Opera Bob’s and get setup for our pre-game live stream?

And speaking of, our little slice of live video awesomeness starts five minutes from the time I’ve scheduled this post to appear at! So click here to launch the stream!

As if your raging mapler needed any more working, John Lott has a lengthy feature on Brett Lawrie in today’s National Post, while Shi Davidi asks Why Not 2012? at Sportsnet, and our old friend Jordan Bastian demonstrates that understands just how much traffic is generated by the Jays-a-verse, giving the Jays a Wild Card berth and today’s starter, Ricky Romero the Cy Young, in his pre-season picks.

As for actual scuttlebutt, beyond the lineup shenanigans of earlier today, there’s not a whole lot. But it’s Opening Day, for fuck sakes, what more do you want?

  1. Strange happenings at the CircleK between 4-10 tomorrow.

  2. Well at least lawrie did something good today too bad it was good for the indians. By striking out he got indian fans a free circle k pop lol

  3. Vizquel in his insanely long career, has put in five innings total at OF/1B

Now he’s in the box score at both positions

  4. Can Perez find the god damned strike zone please? Thanks.

  5. How many innings do you think this has to go before it merits a mention on ESPN’s front page?

  6. Damn I like the look of the bullpen. Seriously. I just wish the offence would do something and win this game.

  7. Just got home & can’t believe the game is still on. The Jays came back in the 9th, but still haven’t been able to get another run.
That was a pretty crafty move by Farrell to bring Visquel in the game & play with 2 OF.

What a way to start the season, even if we lose ….

Opera Bob’s must be sold out of beer by now…..

  8. Thanks Rajai. Great job bro.

  9. I cant believe that just happened….

  10. wow… the look on Davis’ face.

  11. I’m so fucking mad right now.

  12. My brain hurts.

  13. If the Jays were playing asshole with the Indians Davis would be the looser.. fuck!

  14. Fuck you Rajai, enjoy a week on the bench you lazy ass.

  15. I don’t think it was laziness, but just a mental mistake. What a mental mistake though…

  16. on the other hand holy shit the Bull-pen is dealing.

  17. Eta on Gregg Zaun rage or is that only for Rasmus?

  18. That was for the DUI charge Choo.

  19. Well at least this one won’t be on the Jays pen. What an awesome job regardless of the outcome now.

  20. Muhahaha tribe trying to test Jays swagger

  21. Just release Davis and bring back that scrappy little white kid, McCoy.

  22. Chances Lawrie, JP and Rasmus go 0 for 10 in the first game of the year?

  23. VIZQUEL!

  25. That Aaron Cibia kid did alright.

  26. There we go, a bunt right over the wall

  27. JP!

  29. That ball GOT THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!!

  30. Wicked.

  31. Fuck yes Aaron Cibia!!

  33. Wait… not the closer? Perez?

  34. I want Santos! BRING ON SANTOS!

  35. YES! SANTOS!!!

  36. One down!!!

  37. Helluva way to start the season

  38. Pen throws 11 innings of 4 hit ball. Pretty awesome way to start year.

  39. GG

  40. I’m limp. I’m exhausted.

  41. fuck yeah, good come from behind win to start the year. thanks for the gift in pitching choice in the 9th inning btw cleveland

  42. I wonder if Opera Bob’s is still standing.

    • I was wondering this as well. I’m assuming they were all passed out after the 12th

      • Opera Bob’s was rocking right to the end. Parkes and Stoeten, however, may not have seen the 16th inning. Regardless, they stuck it out.

  43. 1. what happened on the davis bunt?

    2. the last four spots in the order combined for 1-20…but that one was huge. still, i dont know if rasmus batting 9th is going to do anything for his confidence.

  44. Joey Bats is the best Jays hitter of all time, easy.

  45. It was JPA’s day. The HR was great, but he was quiet behind the plate, and his blocking balls in the dirt was first class. He also took charge when Rickey pretended he was going to cover home plate to prevent a 5th run. JPA is here to stay

    • Yeah he played a very good defensive game. Actually he nearly played two. The guys legs must be killing him right about now.

    • And he got one good break when the ball bounced towards 3rd when the winning run was sitting there. But hey, maybe he caused it to bounce that way!

Either the bullpen was very impressive or Cleveland is an awful hitting team. I’m going with a little of both.

      • He deserved one good break after catching that marathon. But I guess you have to be perfect to qualify for a good game played around here.

        • Night, you are right. I was thrilled with JPA cause he showed so much improvement. Bautista has his usual 3 for 4 game, with 2 RBI’s and its just a normal day at the office for him.

      • Was it a break if he pushed out his right shoulder and directed the ball that direction?

  46. Fuck that was an amazing afternoon at Opera Bob’s!!! YEAH! The Jays have amazing fans! What a blast!

  47. Epic opening to the year! Go Jays. Aside from the Rajai bunt debacle, the shitty route by Thames, and a few cold bats, that was a hell of a game.

I do feel bad for those Cleveland fans who didn’t bring in their own hard stuff. Nine innings of boozeless baseball is a tough pill to swallow, especially for the home team.

  48. Longest opening day game ever. Always great when every available pitcher get into the game – thankfully tomorrow is an off day!

  49. Here’s my game review not that anyone gives a fuck..

Romero looked just OK at his best moments, didnt seem to have the game face on today which is forgivable. Apart from the homer, he pitched ok.

The hitters were making Masterson look better than he actually pitched today for the first 6 innings. Then the patience started to settle in a little bit. Lawrie looked way way too eager to hit a 27 run homerun with every swing which is also forgivable being his first opening day. But after the hitters settled in they looked pretty damn good the only hitter that I didnt like the look of today was Thames.

The bullpen was awesome as advertised. Pitched out of tight jams, strike outs and ground balls when needed, cool, calm, collected presence as a whole. They looked great.

On the other side of things, I have absolutely no idea how The Indians are going to get any fans in that ballpark this season. They should have a fire sale with what little they have left. Cabrera should be traded sooner than later while his stock is super high, Jimenez and maybe Masterson plus all the good arms they have in the pen. No one will be in the seats, might as well move em all.

    • For real? Of all our young guys who went hitless, Thames looked the best. He was working counts, making great swings and fouling off pitches too close to take.

He made solid contact on just about every ball he hit.

  50. Anyone know why Santos did NOT get a save?

    • I believe Perez had crossed the base line and therefore had to face the first batter. Therefore, since he got the out, Santos couldn’t complete a full inning and thus get the save stat.

    • Santos didnot start the inning and put himself into a save situation by walking his first man. No save when you do this

      • walking the first man has zero to do with the save stat.

        • No, that matters.

          Conditions for a save:

          He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;

          He is not the winning pitcher;

          He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched;

and He satisfies one of the following conditions:

          - He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning

          - He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck

          - He pitches for at least three innings

He didn’t satisfy #1 or #3, and the typing run was on deck only because he walked a player. You can’t pitch your way into a save.

  51. I know everyone loves Lawrie, and rightfully so.

But as far as this team is concerned Jose Bautista is still very much the straw that stirs the drink.

Just another day at the office, ho-hum, 3-4, 2 BB, HR, SF, switch back and forth between two positions.

I agree with what Stoeten said recently – J-Bau’s passport should not keep him from getting the appropriate amount of love Jays fans should be according him, because what he is doing is fucking phenomenal.

  52. But since when do you have to complete an inning to get a save?

  53. if he had let one more guy on and faced the tying run at the plate, he would have got a save.

  54. The save is a pretty simple stat. Read and understand.

    He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
    He is not the winning pitcher;
He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched; and
He satisfies one of the following conditions:
    – He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning
    – He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck
    – He pitches for at least three innings

  55. The only thing I have to complain about this game was Rasmus going 0-7. I’m totally pro-Rasmus, and I’m pulling for the guy to bounce back–nice diving catch btw–but his 0-7 is probably going to flare up some Rasmus hate in the media.

  56. I Will say, there is something to be said about watching a game, shoulder to shoulder with a few dudes you don’t know. high fiveing like ya don’t give a fuck and enjoying a game of baseball. Well done DJF for not going commercial/corporate on our asses. hell of a day!

  57. I’m as concerned about Rasmus as anyone else, but give him a month or two to figure it out. If he’s hitting .200 in May there will still be time for him to turn it around and we don’t need his bat to carry this team. He is a 7-8-9 type hitter for this team and if he ever does what he did in 2010 again we will have an incredible offense.

Give the guy a bit of time, although I admit it doesn’t look promising. If he is playing poorly by July then maybe Snider can take his place. As of right now Rasmus looks worse than John Mcdonald at the plate.

    • nobody is taking his place all year. If we can get good offensive production out of our CF, that’s obviouly ideal. But what you need is gret defense, and he’s got it.

  58. Nice night in minors too, NH wins (AJ Jimenez, 3 for 5, 1 SB and he threw out a runner), Dunedin wins (Markus Knecht HR and Stilson threw 3 shutout innings). Aaaand, in the Vegas Pinball Machine, Laffey rocked for 7 runs, but Hechavarria 2 for 3 (2 doubles) TravS has 2 singles, Yan Gomes continues and Cooper had 2 hits too.

  59. i only caught the second half of the game today but liked what i saw from the pen and joey bats.
i have concern about all the mental mistakes though…

  60. So what was the wisdom of Wilner after the show? I didn’t catch it.

  61. Looks like Farrell learned a thing or five over the off-season…

    • Thought the same.
      Pleasantly surprised.

    • Probably the best managed game by a Blue Jays manager I have seen in the last decade.

      • Yeah. I thought the same. Pulled pitchers at the right time, brought in pinch runners that paid off, and moved to a 2 man outfield. Farrell’s a keeper.

And like i said before, so is Arincibia. Black and blue ballsack blocking balls with his balls, went 0-6 and then wins it with a jack. Thats a goddamned gamer boys.

        • Groooobaaah. Great fucking game! JPA looked good behind the dish. Fuck d’Arnaud.

Where is Stoeten? Probably still hung over after drinking all those mimosas?

Farrell has more interesting pieces to play with this season. A set bullpen, thanks to AA’s dealing in the off-season. And a versatile bench. Despite Davis’ unforgivable fuck-up with the sacrifice bunt, he is useful in late inning pinch running. Proved that by scoring the tying run in the 9th. No way Lind scores on that play.

Did question why he didn’t pinch hit Francisco later in the game for Davis. Overall, great managed game.

  62. Saw the banners around the RC. To me “Back in Blue” sounds better than Blue is Back (sounds like Black and Blue, as in we will beat you, and Blue is Back sounds like Blue is the new Black). quibble

  63. Daniel Norris, Kevin Comer and Robert Osuna made appearances in Lansing yesterday (i guess just for the exhibition game vs Michigan St.) here is a game summary:

    • Nice link. Is Osuna going to stick with Landing? That would be awesome if he could handle it but holy shit, the kid is only 17.

      • Nah, he’s in extended, didn’t make the Lansing roster. He did pitch in the Mexican league last year so your guess is as good as mine as to which short season team he breaks with.

  64. So which DJF at Opera Bobs passed out first? And did he get his face makered like Big Papi?

  65. No new post yet today.
    Stoeten musta got shitfaced.
    Sounds like a great time.
If Stoeten can stay away from sharp objects,I think I’ll show up for the next one.

BTW: from the pictures of the event,It looked packed in there.
Was there anyone there over the age of 35?
I’d hate to be the token old fart sitting in the corner.

    • Ballsdeep and Radar, if you guys commit, I’ll join you too next year. Of hell, maybe this year later in the season at the Opera.

    • I was there and I’m 41 for what it’s worth. Definitely a ballgame type atmosphere with people that really knew the team. It was a great time and I’m glad I went.

      • I didn’t know anyone in the bar before I got there. Everyone was friendly and I had a great time. I think a few people got turned away because it was absolutely full.

        • Yeah Nohd.
I find some of the commenters on DJF extremely knowledgable, would like to meet and discuss shit. That conversation on steriods with Bill was very interesting.

BTW: Did Stoeten look like he was packin heat?Or any sharp objects?Did he wander around saying things like ” I’m huntin Radars”,with that wild look in his eyes?

      • 41?

        You’re still a youngin.

The bars I go to have vending machines for Depends.

        Thank goodness.

  66. Feel fat and lazy. Now I know how Stoten feels. A useless and fucking fat tub of Goo.

  67. Stoten’s typical Friday night – cry, masturbate, pick your nose, and pull the shitballs from his hairy arse.

  68. Great times at Opera Bob’s were had by all. The boys drank enough to put themselves out of commision till after the long weekend so keep up to date with someone that has absolutely no affiliation with drunkjaysfans…
do it quick before I get blocked again and my comment is deleted.

  69. SoberJaysFans. Fuck off with your point 5′s. Being sober is for quiters.

    • True. that’s why I’ve found the balance. Sober in the sense that I can wake up the next morning and remeber what I did the day before. Unless the game goes like 16 innings or something, or someone stands in the box for 10 seconds while he gets doubled up…

      • Okay. Its all about the memories. Be a Drunk Jays Fan, just don’t get drunk.

By the way, I was told I had a great time Opening Night.

  70. This makes up for the July 7, 2011, Travis Haffner game winning HR game. All is well with the universe again.

  71. Prospect boner alert: this guy was tweeting from Lansing tonight, says radar at stadium had Syndegaard hitting 97 and then 100. He said Syndegaard was “sitting” 95. Now, he probably knew he was only going 3 innings, but still . . . fuck yeah.

  72. How is it possible no one has mentioned the weather yet? I have literally. Ever been so cold on my live sitting I the shade with the wind. The fact the players could even swim he bat was incredible. I think it played a huge factor in the game. I can’t even imagine how cold the. Oys were standing in he field, the windchill was below zero. 13 and sunny here tomorrow though with very little wind, getting cl

  73. How is it possible nobody has mentioned the weather at the game? The wind was nuts and windchill was below zero. I thought I was going to die around the 14th inning. The fact they even finished the game was incredible in my eyes!

  74. Good news on the Hechavarria watch: 4 for 9 thru 2 games, with some video evidence:

  75. Can someone put up a weekend game thread???
