Jesus, still?

The goddamn Orioles? Still? Running guys like tonight’s starter Tommy fucking Hunter out there? And still?

Of course, I talk with a straight face of vaguely-realistic playoff chances for the 2012 Jays, as they run Drew Hutchison and Kyle Drabek out there– on this week’s podcast, specifically, in the face of Parkes’s rational look at the standings– so the hell am I to scoff at anyone’s shitbag, really?

Oh, but I will. I will, and I’ll think of every hopeless article about the magic of Buck Showalter, and every clueless suggestion that the O’s are real, or last year’s Clevelands were real, or the 27-14 Jays, or the 2008 Ra– well… um… how the fuck are the Orioles not terrible?!!?!?

Tonight the downfall continues. I can feel it.

As you can see from the lineups, Johnson is in, and so is Vizquel– as Yunel Escobar is day-to-day with a groin thing. Jeff Mathis gets the start too, and Travis Snider’s placeholder amazingly bats fifth. With Yan Gomes optioned down to help spare the bullpen, it leaves JP Arencibia, Rajai Davis, and… um… that’s about it on the bench.

John Lott tweets that Adam Lind’s work in Las Vegas has been “encouraging,” according to Alex Anthopoulos, and that “when he starts stringing together great games and great at-bats, day in and day out, we’ll finally feel he’s back to where he should be.”

The minor league report from Bluebird Banter informs us that Vlad Guerrero was 2 for 5 with home run for Dunedin on Sunday. The Toronto Star reports that he could be at Double-A or Las Vegas as soon as the end of the week.

  1. Do the OriLOLs need another proven closer for their ‘pen?

  2. Clearly, Farrell was just trying to get Janssen another save.

  3. Thanks for some good pitching Janssen. Fuck off Cordero.

  4. Yay! Home sweet home!

  5. There has to be someone better than CoCo out there somewhere, no?

    • Honestly I’m getting near the end of my rope with Cordero. There’s just no situation you can bring him in.

  6. Great start by Hutch, that’s 4 good to very good starts vs 4 bad ones. Should be something very nice when he gets some decent off speed.

    • three of his last four starts have been one earned run or fewer.

the other start was vs the rays and when it comes to stats vs the rays, you dont have to count the jays stats vs that opponent due to various magic spells and voodoo curses currently in play vs that opponent

  7. As good as KJ was at the plate, he was labouring on the basepaths and was a statue in the field. There were a couple of groundballs were he would have ordinarily got to the ball or at least made an effort, but he either just stood there and watched or barely moved. They need McCoy up here instead of Laffey.

    • Should be interesting to see what they do if he’s labouring that much. Might need to start him at DH, EE at 1st and bring up another middle infielder just for backup. Hopefully they get a nice long start from Romero tomorrow so they can do that. Better to rest KJ for 3-4 days than lose him for a couple of weeks.

  8. This win sure makes you feel better, its great to see a turnaround like tonight. I had no idea the Hutch had that kind of fastball – awsome. Well done Toronto. Now make this game count by beating the O’s again tomorrow

    • He had a great strikezone plot for the game. Only 4 pitches in the top quarter and most of the rest were to the inner and outer halves.

  9. Gose, Hech, Lind all had 2 more hits tonight. Gose also had another SB through the 7th inning.

  10. Where the fuck did hutchison’s mid 90s fb come from? If he can throw with that velo consistently, his upside is much greater. The only negative in this game is thames continues to suck and he has no business hitting 5th.

    • Can’t prove it, but I suspect the RC gun is a bit juiced this year. I was there last weekend and Jon Rauch supposedly hit 94, which I’m fairly sure is impossible. He sat around 89 when he played for us, and don’t think he was ever above 90-91.

My bet would be it’s about 3 mph fast and those 95s were 92, which sounds about right for Hutch at max effort.

      • When I saw coco hit 95 I thought the same thing. Hutch is still young so I could maybe believe him adding a bit if he was pumped up.. but no way Cordero is hitting 95.

      • Pitch F/X confirmed that we was peaking at 95. So I think that was legit.

  11. I could see Cordero hitting 95
    95 ERA that is.
