Wristwatch: Travis Snider

Travis Snider’s new equipment.

More missed opportunities behind him, Travis Snider is back playing baseball, as you can see above, sporting a fancy new wonky-wrist protector for when he’s on the base paths while rehabbing in extended Spring Training last night.

Alexis Brudnicki was there, tweeting that he reached base twice– including a long double– that he stole a base, slid thrice, and ripped his pants open, but that his wrist seemed fine.

She also filed an excellent, lengthy, profile of the bad luck outfielder for CBC Sports– though he would insist that he not be called that. “I feel like that position’s always been mine and I’m the only one to blame for the struggles and, per se, losing that position,” he says of the left field job in Toronto, currently occupied by Rajai Davis, after Eric Thames– victor in this spring’s nominal battle for the spot– was demoted after putting up a .230 wOBA, a .108 ISO and striking out 31.8% of the time in May.

Snider admits that he knew from the pain and the amount of work he had to do just to swing that he wasn’t truly ready to return to action following his first stint on the DL this season, which led to him shutting himself back down, allowing the injury to– he hopes– fully heal.

Which it has… we assume. At the very least, he’s back playing, albeit while wearing a wrist guard, and will continue to move up through the ranks tonight, as he’ll apparently be in the lineup for the FSL Dunedin Blue Jays, according to a tweet from the affiliate’s PA announcer, Bill Christie.

Brudnicki adds that Snider “said he doesn’t know his timetable and was waiting to hear, but extended spring ends today so decisions will have to be made.”

Surely he’ll be back in Las Vegas soon, and if he picks up hitting where he left off prior to the first DL trip, it should only be a matter of time before he gets another crack at Toronto.

No, really. I mean, Rajai Davis has had some nice games– as many home runs as Brett Lawrie!– and can be a nice late-game weapon on the basepaths, and I get that now there’s a lot of fringe MLB bodies to contend with on the roster and in Vegas at the moment, but Snider can actually play solid defence in left *COUGH* Eric Thames *COUGH* and is capable of being the best hitter among any of them by a country fucktonne. No, it’s far from a guarantee that he’ll play in the Majors the way so many for so long have felt he’s capable, and I’m sure plenty of morons are reading this salivating at how they’re about to go braying in the comments below, smugly letting shit slide out their mouths about what a bust he is, but… Jesus fuck, we waited out Thames, now let’s get some damn Snider ABs around here and find out for damn sure if we need to bother to keep on caring already!

  1. i think this guy’s a bust.

  2. I’m excited to get Snider back up to the Big Club soon, he has all the ability to be a good major leaguer, I’m really hoping that he sticks this time….

  3. Thanks for the update, Stoeten. Hadn’t heard anything on Snider for some time until this.

I also look forward to his getting a serious run of playing time with the Jays before too long. Hope it happens.

  4. I still have a hard time believing he didn’t make the club out of Spring Training. Stoeten made a good argument for why they might have wanted to keep him down, to prove the canges to his mechanincs would stick and not yoyo him around, but damn. What’s a guy got to do to beat out Eric motherfucking Thames. Here’s hoping he rakes on arrival

    • “What’s a guy got to do to beat out Eric motherfucking Thames”

He had to hit better then he did in ST… which he didn’t. Now he’ll have to hit better then Thames & Davis did/do while in the Bigs to stick around (since I assume he coming up soonish is mostly a foregone conclusion).

      • ummm you might want to go back and check the spring stats again.. only thing Thames did better was hit more singles.

        • Okey rechecking done…

          Thames OPS: .987
          Snider OPS: .965

… I hereby refuse to amend my statement. Thames did hit better then Snider in ST.

    • thames, cooper, alvarez, arencibia, and sierra for the king

      • You can’t just choose the players you no longer want on the team and plug them into a trade for one of the best pitchers in baseball. Trades don’t work that way

  5. Sniders defence and his potential to rip any ball ( not just mistake pitches like Thames) out of the park really offers a lot to the Jays. Adding his power and decent speed could add a lot to the offense. I still haven’t found a reason to bash Snider. This is the first season in the history of Travis Snider being in the org that they are treating him like a prospect/developing young player. I really think the extended work will help him stay within himself for a prolonged duration…But I also have worries that Dwayne”Hit a Tater” Murphy will whisper something in his ear and send him spiraling into AAA greatness.

    • Im all for the Snider positivity movement but how much of this is simply because he is not here? Its like the concept of the backup quarterback being the most popular guy in town…simply because he’s the alternative and has not had a chance to show his limitations while the starters get picked apart because.well…we actually SEE them play

No doubt Snider has the ability to play a solid LF and he has, in the passed, shown an ability to hit and hit for power. However, I dont think that the idea that he can hit ANY pitch, not just mistakes, a long way is necessarily true. He’s had a LOT of trouble with hard stuff in and up/away in his last two big league stints.

Just saying that its easy to praise someone when they are not actually playing before your eyes and easy to criticize them when they are.

    • Any ball? Hyperbole. He was flailing around out there a lot last year.

Not to say that’s still true but I’d have to see major league evidence to say that it’s not.

  6. Extended spring training? Isn’t it June? How long does that run?

Still, good to see him out there. Hope he’s back with the big club before too long.

  7. Can whatever company that made that wrist thingy please make a shoulder-thingy for Santos next? Thanks.

  8. I just hope that he doesn’t come up for his “last chance” (that’s what people will call it) with a wrist that is less than 100%.

  9. I want to see Moises Sierra to good for Triple A, and I know Snider and Thames are as well but I havent seen a Sierra AB.
He’s been playing CF, a little lately and he’s played RF and LF, if he can play CF he should have no problem in LF.
But can he hit at the Major league level, if snider gets hurt again or is playing poorly in Triple A due to the time he missed I would rather see Sierra then Thames.
To bad John Farrell isnt reading this I know you like Lefties but Thames can not hit Right handed pitching so he’s useless as a leftie when he cant hit at all in the Majors or play defense.
I do think Thames can hit his timing see’s decent but his paitence and swing need work.
He’s fairly patient every where but high, It seems he swings at every pitch that’s high and out of the strike zone around his eyes and I think that’s his batting stance and the bat being to high when he starts his swing fooling him into thinkin git’s a good pitch becuase of where he hold sthge bat. He holds the bat to high I’d like him to bring it lower and see if that helps him any.

  10. ‘I think we should trade hjm”

    “ya defintiely, he’s no good”

    “i agree with those guys”

“so we all agree we should trade him, good”

    • Hey, Homer, I’m worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there’s only one case left.

  11. Could see a LF platoon employed given the way Rajai has been playing of late and Snider’s not greatness against lefties. Although i figure it would be better for Snider to play daily. Maybe give him the day off against guys like Price/CC

    • Who cares if Snider plays everyday. Im all for what helps the team win and sometimes guys cant hit lefties. Im not sure why there is this huge Scarlet Letter in the majors for a platoon situation, especially when you are the LEFT side of the platoon. I mean you are going to getting the start more than 75 percent of the time anyway..and even in games in which you dont start there is a good chance you will get in to pinch hit.

it would be different if he played a premium position such as SS, CF…or even 3b where you really needed him for defense everyday, but ..shit…there is hardly a position that lends itself better to a lefty/righty platoon than LF.

  12. So we’re morons if we don’t get emotional and annoint Snider the LF of the future.
I’m all for giving the guy a chance but is his defence better than Gose or Sierra? His speed? His durability?
We all have a soft spot for Snider because he was THE prospect when there weren’t any others.
    Excuses are over.
    He’s so young.Sample Size.He’s been yo-yo’d.Cito fucked him up.
When he’s fully healthy, it time to show whether he’s a major leaguer or a AAAA player.
There are others who are gonna overtake him on the depth chart if he doesn’t.

    • Gose is not a Leftfielder

and Sierra’s best MiLB season to date has been a .778 OPS as a 23 year old in AA.
He’s in no way better than Eric Thames let alone Snider

      • He’s 23 and was hurt all of last year, have you seen what he’s done in Triple A I know it’s vegas but Eric Thames played in Vegas and yeah going by Vegas and what Thames has done in the MLB, I hav eno problem saying Moises Sierra is better then Thames.
With a new stance/Swing or more patience maybe Thames can be a better complete hitter then Sierra, but Sierra can actually play defense and has a better arm.
I’m done with Thames until he cahnges something, I’m all for Sierra if Snider cant go.

      • Sierra defense >>>>>>>>>>>> Thames.

Sierra has one of the best arms in the entire organization..including pitchers. I dont think he is anything like thames at all. he’s more like a modern day Jose guillen

    • Yes, to answer your first line. Didn’t read the rest.

      • So you’re admitting that it’s more of an emotional decision for you and not performance related.
Bring the kid up,when he’s healthy, I hope he rakes. But if he doesn’t, what’s the next excuse?

        • He’s still younger than Thames and much MUCH better with the glove? If he hits at the same level as Thames did this year (and I suspect he’ll do better than that) his glove AND age AND pedigree are enough of a reason to keep him over Chocolate Thunder…

          • Okay,give him a chance.
When he first came up ,raked and sent down it was because he was young.
The next time it was because anger issues and couldn’t control himself at the plate.
Next time it was because Cito didn’t hit him in the 4 spot.
            Then it was injury.
Then it was because he didn’t get 500 at bats.
Then it was because he was sent up and down too much.
Then it was the hitting coach.
            Then his mechanics were off.
            Etc.

    • I say give him the rest of the season, let him know only an injury knocks him out, and see what happens. Give Rajai the atbats against the tougher lefties.
Wow… I think I just said the most obvious, overstated and conventional wisdom solution to the problem possible.

      • I think this is fair. When did Thames get called up last year, late May or early/mid June? He got a decent amount of playing time and did okay in the batter’s box but was a trainwreck in the field.

Snider, at the very least, will be mediocre hitting-wise but top-notch defensively. If his potential hitting tools that we all salivate over are refined, he could be tearing the face off the ball AND playing premium defense.

Better than underwhelming hitter and terrible outfielder Eric Thames.

  13. I told you guys I could hit if you gave me a chance.

  14. Snider has never been THAT bad,.. he’s really been a victim of really high expectations

if you look at his career numbers, he’s been sent down while puting up numbers that resemble many of the current players we’ve run out every game this year.

Last year was probably the anomaly because he was hurt

    • Sorry but all I’ve been hearing for years is excuses.Snider rakes in Vegas, comes up rakes then looks lost at the plate.I haven’t been awed by his defense. Even you say he hasn’t been THAT bad.Not great, but not that bad. Fantastic, let him not shit the bed after a month in the majors. It wasn’t Cito who sent him down last year, it was Farrell. And that was because of performance.

      • I would honestly like to see him spend a full season at one level. We honestly have no idea what he could do in that situation. If he sucks, well then fuck it.

As an aside, RADAR, the yacht sounds wonderful, and Lulu wants to know if you’re bringing a date. If not, her cousin Petra is coming stag as well. She’s from Pripyat, near Chernyobl, and has a whole Total Recall third boob thing going. It’s going to look great in the bridesmaid’s dresses birddawg paid for.

      • Snider has a career ops of .730 brought down signficantly by last year.

Brett lawrie’s current ops is .709
        Aaron Cibias OPS is .699
        Yan Gomes is .681
        Eric Thames is .652
        Yunel Escobar is .640

all of whom, outside of Gomes, have gotten more playing time than Snider did before he was send down.

So with all due respect, you are clearly being just as emotional as any die hard Snider fan, except you are trolling with it.. and not being a very good troll I might add.

  15. Hope he gets back as soon as possible. Rajai Davis is not a starting LF.

  16. Stoeten, I hope Snider gets back up to the Majors. Got a soft spot for Ol’ Travis and I think alot of others do too. Kid does play D out there in left and although Rajai has been dependable as of late, Travis is just a much better all around fit in left. And I agree with whoever above that Dwayne Murphy should lay off mind-fucking the kid when he’s back up. God only knows what Cito did to Travis 2 years ago.

  17. thames, snider, and lind. that’s 3 former left fielders for the jays all playing in vegas! AWKWARD!!!

    • If you guys could not have a MLB lineup on your AAA club we would all appreciate it. RIght now we face lind, Hech, snider, Vlad, thames, D’rnaud, sierra. We would really appreciate if the skill level of your lineup was more like your bullpen

  18. He guys…I dont want to sound mean or anything..I know Im the new guy around here. But I thought that you should know about the rumors I’ve been hearing around town. Turns out that David Cooper was a male prostitute that used to hang out at the Wynn Encore everynight after games. YEAH I KNOW…HARD TO BELIEVE…but I’ve got some evidence that just might prove this thing to be TRUE!!!!

So yeah..just keep that in mind when you are thinking about whether or not to bring me up to T DOT.

    thanks

    A concerned orgainzational soldier

  19. Heres the Lineup that brings the Jays to the World Series 1. Lawrie 2. Rasmus 3. Snider 4. Bautista 5. Encarnation 6. Escobar 7. Johnson 8. JPA 9 ___-
Nine is blank because we need a real first baseman. If Cooper can obp .400 fine, but from what I read, thats not possible. So, get a firstbaseman, another pitcher, move Alverez to the bullpen and if you have a bench of Cooper, Davis, Guerrero , Visquel, I think thats pretty good.

  20. Desmond jennigs is currently playing LF so I dont see how it’s the end of the world if Gose comes up later this year and plays LF if the blue jays are even sniffing that second wild card I want the best team possible and if that’s gose in LF for 2012 then fine, we can move him to CF in 2013 and move Rasmus to LF or whatever they chose to do but I want the best team in August if there’s a chance for that wildcard.
I know Gose is to good for LF but his arms very good it wouldnt be the end of the world either if we have two huge arms in Left and Right holding runners with Rasmus in CF with his decent arm.
In 2014 we could move Jose to 1B or 13 if we lose EE and put Gose in RF it’s requires more skill then LF in most ball parks if that would keep Gose happy I know he wants to play CF.

    • Desomnd Jennings

      • Punctuation! It’s Called fucking punctuation! Please for the love of god use it and stop Bob Fucking Elliotting your comments. It’s too early in the day for either of us to be drunk enough to either type or read anything that fucking awfully written! Fuck! I hate quitting smoking!

Aside from that, I also don’t see anything wrong with moving Gose to left on his first call up, contrary to what some may have said (lookin at you Parkes). That being said, please, mother fucking please do not let him get fucking Snidered.

        Say No To Yo-Yo!

        • You guy actually failed to use punctuation everywhere it was needed in your post, so not sure what you’re trying to do?
You should stop trying to be above ever one else on here and grow the fuck up.⸮
I Thought about here’s the only explanation: your a fucking tool. ⸮
This isn’t a place to get evaluated on your spelling or/and grammar or any fucking thing else you want to pick apart, here’s a thought don’t fucking read it.
If you’re going to get on me for not using punctuation, where were you for the spelling and grammar on mine and everyone else who comments including you? Do you really need to reply to every fucking other person who fails to meet your demands you sad Nazi of a man. ⸮
Yes quitting smoking does suck but Jesus man who fucking cares about grammar and spelling and all that shit on a fucking site called drunk Jays.
Responding to you on this one time to maybe help you realize that correcting people and trying to be smarter then everyone and I’m sure you’re not is just a huge fucking waste of your time.⸮
          Let’s fucking talk baseball.
          James
With all respect seeing how I don’t know you.
          ¡

          • What an incredible twat you are James.

          • James says: Do you really need to reply to every fucking other person who fails to meet your demands you sad Nazi of a man.

            HA!! That was fucking Classic!

          • I got an idea for you: Save the DJF posts for when you get back home, and settle in your Mom’s basement.

          • Literacy counts. Consider this a motivator.

          • Here, let me evaluate your essay:

You guy actually failed to use punctuation everywhere it was needed in your post, so not sure what you’re trying to do?

            1) Guy should be, “guys”.
            2) Period, not comma after “post”. New sentence.
            3) “So not sure what you’re trying to do.” This is not a question.

You should stop trying to be above ever one else on here and grow the fuck up.⸮

            4) It should be, “everyone” not, “ever one”.
            5) Also, “grow the fuck up” should be, “grow-the-fuck-up”.

I Thought about here’s the only explanation: your a fucking tool.

            6) No capitalization on “thought”.
            7) You’re, not your.
            8) It’s a messy sentence, but should read as such: “I’ve thought about it, and here’s the only explanation: you’re a fucking tool.”

This isn’t a place to get evaluated on your spelling or/and grammar or any fucking thing else you want to pick apart, here’s a thought don’t fucking read it.

            9) Apparently it is a place where you get evaluated for spelling and grammar.
            10) The “or/and” is redundant. Just us one or the other.
            11) We covered this earleir: “any-fucking-thing-else”
            12) Period and new sentence after “apart”.
            13) Comma after “thought”

If you’re going to get on me for not using punctuation, where were you for the spelling and grammar on mine and everyone else who comments including you? Do you really need to reply to every fucking other person who fails to meet your demands you sad Nazi of a man.

            14) This paragraph is a mess, I don’t know where to start.

Yes quitting smoking does suck but Jesus man who fucking cares about grammar and spelling and all that shit on a fucking site called drunk Jays.

            15) This sentence is a run-on sentence.
            16) This is also a question, please us “?” at the end.
            17) Drunk Jays is the name of a proper noun, it needs to be capitalized.

Responding to you on this one time to maybe help you realize that correcting people and trying to be smarter then everyone and I’m sure you’re not is just a huge fucking waste of your time.

            18) This should start with “I’m”, as you are expressing your opinion.
            19) This is also a run-on and incomplete sentence. That is very hard to accomplish.
            20) Than, not “then”.

            Let’s fucking talk baseball.

            21) This needs an “!”.

          • Can you dig it, Suckaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

          • Talking baseball is much easier when people leave comments thata re easy to read. you don’t need footnotes and a professional proofreader, but please at least try to make your comments somewhat easy to read.

            Thanks.

          • Dear Gammer Nazi, you are to English; what Umpires are to baseball. Thank you so much for your fucking evaluation of James’ prose. It is reassuring to know that there are guardians of our language out there

          • A) No I’m not perfect. It’s a shame, I’m working on it.
            B) The problem I have with your post is that your lack of punctuation makes it unreadable, which is a shame because, after reading through the nonsensical, long-winded bullshit that it comes out as with no stops, I (as I noted above) saw that I agreed with your main points. My frustration with your lack of punctuation is mainly because I enjoy the dialogue that often takes place on these boards and find it frustrating when a comment makes my eyes bleed.
That being said, your point around my getting annoyed with your style is duly taken. I hope you can appreciate the rationale behind my comment, and my aggravation. As to your point about not reading it if it annoys me, well, why post something completely illegible if you don’t want it read? Just wondering. Also, I’m not entirely sure what demands I made of you at any point before asking that you use punctuation. And way to invoke Godwin’s Law halfway through a post… almost stopped me from reading the rest.

To be perfectly frank, I don’t give a shit whether they taught you about spelling, punctuation, grammar or personal hygiene at whatever school you dropped out of in grade 6. This is the internet. There’s only really two things you need here: a little literacy, and a sense of humour. I guess I touched a nerve with you there. Sorry bout that.

Now go fist yourself, and remember the slogan:
“Because we’re smarter than you… and more drunk.”

            Have a nice day.

          • Good spelling usually helps in understanding what it is you are attempting to say. I heard that you can get a GED by calling “1-800-TALK-DUMB”. Maybe you should give them a call. By the way, the thing you use to call is called a TELEPHONE.

        • again, loser

          • @Paul ) No I’m not perfect. It’s a shame, I’m working on it.

            14) This paragraph is a mess, I don’t know where to start. (When you’re stating a fact you don’t continue talking in the same sentence)

            21) This needs an “!”.( This needs an !)

          • @ Ottawa Jays
Talking baseball is much easier when people leave comments thata re easy to read. you don’t need footnotes and a professional proofreader, but please at least try to make your comments somewhat easy to read.

            Thanks.
I’m not even going to correct all of what’s wrong with that paragraph.

          • @Booker T
“That can’t be your real name”? if it is in fact, then wow you didn’t pass the 6th grade either man.

          • @wayne
Consider this motivation. Is what you should have said, it just makes more sense.

          • @And there she goes…
It’s you’re and your first sentence makes no sense, try revising it.
The last one makes no sense either. If your going to call me dumb make sure you’re actually perfect.
Alot of dumb people on here, I’m not claming my posts arent terrible. But if your going to attack them be perfect or at least fucking decent.
Use your fucking name… Migetuallyitculiar Fuck.

        • ,./;’:”!?

          does that help?

      • Get back to work quit minimizing the atrocities of the Nazis by comparing them to people who just hate you

    • I would be fine with that if I expected that Gose would currently out-perform Snider. I’m not convinced of that fact (granted: they’re TOTALLY different hitters…)

I think the best LF this team could field (barring a trade) is Snider.

  21. Back in ‘Nam we knew what a real left fielder was. You guys are just a bunch of bitches.

  22. This kid is going to be a star.

  23. I’m sick of Snidergate. Never has so much been written about a .210 hitter who bounces back and forth between AAA and the bigs. Get healthy, get up here and shit or get off the pot! Give him 500 motherfucking ML at bats and then either put him in the HOF or shoot him in the head. Enough already. The team needs an answer here so we can figure out whether to make a trade, sign an FA, promote someone else, or build a statue of Travis and place it on top of the CN Tower. Fuck.

  24. I liked Snider but he has proven nothing . I watched Gose in Vegas this year and he is an exciting player. Zaun gets excited by Raja well wait till he sees Gose he is going to cream his suit

  25. It’s laughable when wilner compared snider to alex gordon. well gordon has now regressed back to his old shitty self. fact is shitty hitters are probably always going to be shitty. snider has 800 ab’s in the majors. his time is almost up. he prob gets 1 more year until gose takes his place.

    • I love it when people cite Snider’s total at bats in the bigs as if it’s an argument that he’s gotten enough at bats to show his true talent level. I like how you carefully left out those 800 AB’s were accumulated over 3 fucking years, pretty hard to get comfortable at the plate when you get yanked before getting 200 consecutive at bats. Fuck off grouchy, your the biggest troll on this site.

  26. What does it matter, just pick one and play. If Travis plays and gets hurt in the next 3 months then well your back to Davis and Thames, preferably Davis.

  27. Snider has lost his starting AAA LF job to Thames. How far down he ladder of success can he go?

  28. If Snider comes up, I really hope he doesn’t bring that silly moustache with him. Makes him look like a creep

  29. I get the feeling Snider gets until the end of this season, possibly till mid-2013 if the wrist lingers, at which point if he’s still not for real Gose gets a crack at it.

  30. Package up Snider and Lind and trade for anybody!! And by the way, how much does everyone hate the White Sox commentator who always says “This game is OVUH!!” What a dickhead….

    • Snider and Lind and, and and and and.
Fucking terrible. Why the fuck does your user-name have the word And with a capitol? WTF!
      Thou froward clay-brained strumpet!
      You Self-aggrandizing little fuck.

    • @And there she goes…(Little Fuck)
It’s you’re and your first sentence makes no sense, try revising it.

      • James,

        less coffee more weed

        • more eating weed, got it.

          • This sentence above doesn’t make any sense, if your going to claim your some grammar god’s, then come up with complete sentences that make sense.

I never claimed to be the grammar police.
I’m 18 and I bet I make more money and way smarter then 90% of the population on this site.

From typing fas,t I get accused of being illiterate and dumb.Yet none of you can even name all of the punctuation I used in my response to Paul.
Not even Paul who’s the Grammar Nazi god, could name or even know what the punctuation I used means .
All of you on here stop trying to pretend you’re all smarter than me…. when your not at all.
Grammar isn’t a means of intelligence. Which shows you’re all ridiculously fucking stupid.
Some of the smartest guys in the history of this world couldn’t read or write…. morons.

  31. @+1Gang to James for being an outright douche. That’s not a real sentence…. and ditto to you.

  32. I think we really offended James.
Seriously, mate, I recommend staying away from the internet for a while… it doesn’t seem to agree with yo.

    • Proves my point almost every comment I posted in response to you all, had a punctuation mark that showed I wasn’t serious.
Paul you should know this you’re the punctuation King.
Paul you shouldn’t have a comma after seriously.
