How about a hand for Staff Ace Brett Cecil and Major League First Baseman Adam Lind? It was a great day for second chances.

  1. Jose’s arm was tested, but i think i watched Mathis cover the plate upwards of 15 times in a row. That was a great sequence.
Please continue to compile these Post game graphs.

  2. This is the best addition to any site short of pornography. Thank you.

  3. Interesting that Frasor is the arm – when Bautista’s toss and Mathis’ tag were the keys to that inning.

Kelly Johnson is the worst right now.

    • WPA doesn’t take defense into account, so Frasor gets credit for the 8% increase in WE on that play. Indeed, Jose’s arm and Mathis’ tag helped immensely.

    • Does baseball reference have a means to show a running total of a player’s WPA as the season progresses? KJ’s would look sad indeed.

  4. This article had about 98% more analysis than the 5,000 words of crap that made up the Fangraphs power rankings. Jesus Christ those are a pile of shit. If that’s how fWAR evaluates teams then its kind of a waste of everyone’s time.

  5. Yes I realize Mathis is one of the worst hitters in the game, but I just love when he is catching. He makes all the plays, all the throws and watching him frame pitches is a thing of beauty. They need his receiving skills for guys like Cecil and Laffey who will only succeed by throwing to the black or wider.

How many times have we seen JP miss or drop a throw from the outfield? Mathis catches everything and is excellent at blocking the plate. Even though he can’t hit I’m really happy he is on the team this year. Hoping they sign him for the backup role again next year when d’Arnaud is the starter.

    • All it would take is for Mathis to figure out how to hit a baseball more often than not, and he would be some kinda catcher. The guy has the power to hit a ball hard and far, he just looks like he doesn’t have either the eye, or the confidence, or both.

Power example…hella line drive that he took for a single off the top of the fence.. I don’t care who you are that is power.

      • When he actually makes contact the ball jumps off his bat. Trouble is he make Davis look likes Bonds on sliders down and away.

If I’m Murphy I make real simple. If the ball is spinning (curve/slider) don’t swing

  6. Free Jeff Mathis.

  7. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date

  8. yep, Cecil and Lind. Good Job, now if they could only settle down and show us the magic then ya I will be happy.

  9. Great post Archie!

Quick question: Forgive me if this is stupid (I haven’t had my coffee yet), but why are impact pitch and impact AB different?

  10. Forgive me for asking, but what is the y-axis? Is that a happiness meter?

  11. This is great. Very cool.

  12. sheeple.* Do we really need TV shows caelld Judge Judy and Judge Mathis and Judge Joe?- Dumb, poor bastards want to make money airing out their dirty laundry in public. Pretentious people with questionable law degrees want to make money deciding cases of a stolen workout shirt. Unemployed morons like to watch these shows. It’s a win-win-win.* Is it really a human when it’s 20 days old in the womb?- Yes. Period.* Is organized religion really as important as we like to make it out to be?- Nope, not to normal people. Although some are willing to kill for it, so it must be important to the extremists who have no place in our society.* Why do people cut in line and cut you off on the freeway?- Because they can, and because it feels good to pull one over on someone. People in New York do it all the time, and it became a norm. Now the traffic is better and service is faster. Problem solved. Question is, why doesn’t everyone do it?* Do we have the best health care system on earth?- We did, until Obama decided to f*** with it. Free does not mean good. Get a job and get your health insurance. Rich people get better health insurance. Deal with it.* Have you ever yearned?- Yes. I’ll never forget the day the iPhone 4 came out.* What four things has Nancy Pelosi done that are wrong?- 1. Was born. 2. Was educated. 3. Was elected. 4. Was reelected.* Why is “Modern Family” so funny?- Because it’s exactly what’s been missing from today’s TV: good natured humor without vulgarity. It’s like a funny after-school special for adults.* Can you love a soldier and hate a war?- You can love a soldier and hate a war, as long as you support nuking the enemy to prevent said war.* Would you cheat on your partner if you knew they’d never find out?- No. Period.* Why is the history of the Roman Empire fascinating?- Because it had liars, soldiers, humor and wars, but no NPR or Nancy Pelosi.* How do you stop feeling sad?- Drink some single malt until it just doesn’t hurt anymore.
