Um… Jose. It’s nice that you’ve got Winter Meetings fever like the rest of us, but you mean like Paul Beeston’s policy to not give more that five years? Or the contracts without no-trade clauses that enabled the Jays to pull off a deal with the Marlins that brought this out of you?

I mean, I’m all for showing solidarity with union bros– Bautista certainly wouldn’t want those kind of limitations when he eventually hits free agency– but… Jesus, Jose, not while the Marlins’ corpse is still warm!

The Jays DO give no trade clauses I believe but dont go over 5 years. That policy is fine as long the jays realize if you wont go over 5 years the aav has to be higher if you want top free agents to sign.
They don’t do no trade clauses either.

Yeah, Mets badly need a catcher. JP Ricciardi drafted arencibia. The only reason a trade would not be done is if the jays dont have enough payroll room to afford dickey AND johnson next year as both would require extensions.
Don’t think that would be too much of an issue going forward. When I ran the numbers a couple of weeks ago payroll didn’t go up a hell of a lot as it was, but they could always get creative and move someone like Romero or Buehrle even if you didn’t get much back for Buehrle. Better yet, trade for Dickey this year. Flip Buehrle now and sign a cheaper one year guy with the savings in the difference between Dickey’s and Buehrle’s 2013 contract.
There is no obligation to extend if you trade for Dickey, unless you want to.
True but then the price you paid for one year of Dickey seems extremely high.
