Listen, I know catching a knuckleball isn’t the easiest thing to do. And I sure as hell couldn’t do it. So I do what I do best. Make GIFs of those who can’t either.

Alright I lied, 10 GIFs

  1. So much ugly.

  2. Methinks we won’t be seeing that again.

  3. Shit. Yu lost the perfecto.

    • Feel some relief for the position players though, if a perfect game is going to be blown with 2 outs in the 9th at least it went down on a come-backer right between his legs.

  4. Almost comical…… but not really.

  5. He’s stabbing at balls like Lorena Bobbitt.

  6. fucking awful.

  7. I never realized how much I <3 logistics.

  8. Regardless, Whadda fukin night. Should a won twice.

    91 wins this year.

    • Just got back from the game. This was a bad night for JPA. The passed balls cost us the first two runs.

He didn’t look good at the plate either.

I do recall Masterson pitching well against the Jays last year.

I understand that the team wanted to let JPA play the home opener, but I assume Blanco will get the next Dickey start.

  9. Gibbons on if JP will catch R.A. again, “why not?”. Ummm, can somebody send him this link???
Thole had 18 passed balls all last yr while JP had 3 tonight. And there was that one scored as a wild pitch that was right in front of JP. Gimmie a break!!!! JP looked almost as bad at the dish. Fucking Gross

    • He apparently said “I don’t see why not.” He said the exact same thing, word for word, about whether Romero would start game 5 of the season against Boston about 4 hours before Ricky got sent to single A. Maybe that’s the kiss of death for the Cibia/Dickey battery?

  10. You need soft eyes.

  11. Now that Cooper is gone… Time for something new but vaguely familiar…

Why didn’t he just catch it?

First words out of my mouth when JP missed one: “Oh boy, here we go…”

First words out of Blanco’s mouth: “Got me some work!”

  12. Was really surprised to see JPA in the lineup. Why was Blanco not in there? Were they throwing out our ‘best’ lineup for Opening Day? Was the slight offensive improvement from JPA worth the three passed balls he gave up?

  13. I’m not going to lie, those runs hurt –

live & learn, henry blanco will get the next one

  14. Game 1 of 162. Long season. Not going to dwell too much on this one.

  15. 10,000 gifs on the front page.

    The death of my laptop

  16. A couple of nice defensive plays by Cleveland pretty much nullified very little offense from the Jays tonight as well.

    • It’s not a “nice defensive play” when the ball is hit right at someone… (which was the case in both Lind’s BIP)

  17. it’s no wonder why the Mets didn’t want JPA

  18. Knuckle baaaal ain’t hitting gloooove #stadiumlove

  19. Horrible start tonight, I got this bad feeling its gonna be a slow start this season then they wil begin catching fire after the first 15 games are through maybe.

  20. I preached to my brother all night about this, but apparently I’m not done. They decide to sign Dickey based on (somewhat) his dome statistics. He goes to the WBC and Arencibia does a decent job. But…

Dickey throws a few pitches off the mound and smiles in the dome. Implying that catching in air is nothing like a dome.

They sign Blanco cus Dickey said his name and still start Arencibia. I honestly don’t get it. All signs pointed toward making every game important but they start a guy who can barely catch the ball in open air in a dome after spreading stories about how much more powerful the pitcher is in a dome without wind. I honestly don’t get it.

We still woulda lost, but I don’t start the everyday catcher on opening day because the casual fans want to see him.

Fuck that was painful the first couple of innings

  21. I’ve had like fourteen beers so that didn’t make much sense in my proofread. I’m positive someone feels the same way and will articulate it better than i.

  22. [...] J.P. Arencibia’s night in 9 GIFs: Another part of baseball is catching the ball. It’s a simple game, you throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. It is, of course, a lot tougher than that when you have to catch or hit a knuckleball. On opening night, Blue Jays catcher, J.P. Arenciba had a rough time with it. I don’t even want to think about how he looked trying to hit the ball. We haven’t seen him throw yet but . . . [...]

  23. Ummm… so…. maybe letting JPA decide that he’s better off catching RA than the guy that caught RA all year last year wasn’t a great idea. Oh right, I forgot….. it’s because we need JP’s “bat” in the lineup.

  25. That last gif sums it up rather nicely.

  26. It’s okay, JP will do an interview talking about his catching skills while wearing a Leafs jersey, holding a hockey stick and finishing each sentence with “Go Leafs Go” and half of Toronto will instantly forget what a poor job he did last night.

  27. It’s a long season people

  28. I am glad they didn’t hurt JPA’s pride or ego by letting him start opening night.

I am pretty sure he did a good enough job of it on his own, by flailing away at nearly every pitch.

I read in Dickey’s book that the catchers that catch him best are not positioned normally to start, meaning their glove is already up in the catch position so that they dont have to move it as far…apparently JPA hasn’t read Dickey’s book.

Get the man a copy and a spot on the bench next start.

  29. [...] Follow that up with a quick look on what it did to J.P. Arencebia [...]

  30. JP should have had his mitt open more, and move faster.

  31. It’s only game 1 so I am going to try not to overreact, but I think that might be the blog post of the season!

  32. That last GIF of DIckey and Aaron Cibia on the bench spoke volumes – in that, Dickey didn’t even LOOK at JPA as he sat next to him. Probably big-time pissed off at the situation. He gets his personal catcher with the team – and JPA gets the start. Someone grow a pair and say “JPA, you work on catching the knuckler at practice for a couple of months – but in the meantime, Blanco gets the game starts”.
Was it ego, or JPA lobbying? Any which way – that experiment should be over for now.

  33. Embarassibia

  34. Not sure how JPA’s lack of catching held the Jays offense back.

1 run is not going to win most games.

  35. I led the NL in PB in 2011 and actually had more in 2012 while catching 66 of RA Dickeys games over the past 3 years, Nickeas and Blanco split the remaining number of games. Sure I had a lot of passed balls but one reason for that was because the growing nastiness Dickey acquired on his knuckler. He kept making it better meaning it would be harder to hit and harder to catch. Even with that, I had the second highest number of defensive runs saved next to Yadi Molina. Also my number of passed balls kept getting better in 2012. Blanco may be a good defensive catcher but can’t do shit with his bat. If JP repeated his game winning 3 run jack heroics this would be a moot point. Clearly, JP can do that and can do it roughly 20+ times a year, Blanco… youd be lucky for 1. And it could happen any game, JP had a great spring, caught RA in the WBC and was a pretty good choice to catch Dickey in the home opener. JPs defensive game has also been getting better over the years and I’m sure can continue to make strides. With Darnaud gone, JP is clearly the catcher of the future. May as well get him acclimated to a pitcher who he’llbe team mates with for the next 3 years. So pretty much, keeping on with JP, would be your best bet. He’ll get better, itll never be easy, but it will be worth it. Cut the guy some slack, he’s a stand up dude and there are so many pessimistic Jays fans that just rag on the players. I can understand being realistic, and obv JP contributed to the loss but there were about 9 other guys that contributed as well, including the all mighty Dickey. Tbh I’d have to say Lind was the worst yesterday. That G/O DP with the bases loaded was heartbraking. Along with a solid plays by Kipnis and Stubbs the better team just won that game. Not to say they are always better but that day they were. Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Now let’s hope we can get a season opening win with my Buffalo Bisons, Go Bisons Go!!!

  36. holy fuck, some of you guys.

It wouldn’t have mattered even if JPA was rock solid because we only scored one freaking run. Cleveland scored two on a HR.

JPA didn’t lose us this game. That said, he shouldn’t catch Dickey again for a while.

  37. I honestly wonder if the Jays have out thought themselves with the whole JPA/Blanco/Thole thing.

I mean, i don’t believe in catchers ERA… but the ability to catch a knuckler is important, and why mess up a good thing (Thole/Dickey)?

  38. [...] they win the award or not. Navarro is serviceable, which means he’s 50 times better than the train wreck that was behind the plate last year and with Melky healthy, the outfield corners aren’t [...]
