World Series Game 4: Chicago White Sox v Houston Astros

This actually happened.

The Jays take on the White Sox tonight, on Jackie Robinson day, and normally I’d try to say something poignant about that, but my brain, like most of yours, I suspect– or at least those of you who live on Twitter– just isn’t ready to process all that needs to be processed in order to put together something coherent. Fortunately for all of us, Drew absolutely nailed all of that earlier today, before what happened in Boston had occurred.

Read Drew’s excellent piece on Jackie Robinson at Getting Blanked. And if you’re searching for something to cling to regarding today’s events, you could do a lot worse than heeding the words of comedian Patton Oswalt’s Facebook post on it. No, really.

Oh yeah, and Mark Buehrle takes on the team he won the 2005 with for the first time. So… yeah.

Contradicting previous reports,

This lineup is just slightly fugly, so let’s hope the Knobler’s earlier report turns out right, though… I wouldn’t hold my breath.

On last year’s Jackie Robinson Day, Craig Robinson put together the definitive infographic on his career, which is worth revisiting at Getting Blanked.

Lastly, for your between-inning listening pleasure, here’s today’s edition of the Getting Blanked Podcast.

  1. Add Kawasaki doing the Lo Viste sign to the GIF collection, please!

  2. It’s not too early to put him in the hof

  3. This Kawasaki strikes me as a pro.

  4. the ninja!!!

  5. nice sac fly bu Boni

  6. bonerface gets the job done

  7. Kawasaki can replace DeRosa as the good-clubhouse-guy

  8. That number 42 is getting a lot of AB’s tonight!

  9. Hits a triple, then bows after he scores.

  10. the guys are lauhing at the other ninja in the clubhouse. funny

  11. how did Rasmus not even get close to that fly ball in CF? I dont think he starts running until the ball is already halfway to him

  12. big deuce play

  13. oh curling??? Pass

  14. That Orange Juilus logo is clipping through Tabler’s head…or maybe it’s intentional viral marketing

  15. Is that the longest dp combo call in the league? How many syllables there? Kawasaki to Izturis to Encarnacion?

  16. this ump is pretty inconsistent

    • I seem to recall on the Getting Blanked or Effectively Wild podcast a week or so ago they mentioned that at 3-0, almost everything is a strike. Interesting to see it in action.

  17. this Konerko at bat is gonna be ugly. hopefully we catch it at the track

  18. Don’t bash curling until you have tried it shit-faced.

Some of the perks of living in a (once) small town.

  19. what a hook!! big K to Konerko!! huge AB

  20. purr-fect curve!!!

    • yeah man. I haven’t seen many nice sweeping curves from Buerhle like that. he should throw it more often. looked nice

  21. i’m liking the other ninja so far. good ABs, wastes lots of pitches, quick, hustles, making good contact and getting some hits and BBs

  22. HUGE CB

  23. Kawasaki & Bonafacio are a buddy movie in the making. Lo Viste Japanese style.

  24. Watching a Buerle start is an hour and a half of anxiety attack…

  25. Reyes is back in the dugout already. nice.

  26. base hit EEE!

  27. wonder when teams are going to start shifting for EEE…

  28. Does someone want to like start a petition to send to Sportsnet to stop using that camera angle?

    • The one that show additional signage for it’s advertisers? Good Luck with that.

      • Sure…Honda and Orange Julius will sign off on that one…no problem.

      • They were using it in Kansas City where they didn’t have superimposed advertising too. It’s the new TV director, Troy Clara, who used to be the TV director for Raptors broadcasts. He was infamous among Raptors fans for cutting to terrible baseline camera angles, especially on breakaway dunks and layups. You see the same thing now when they cut to terrible angles of the baserunners on balls in play instead of staying with the standard camera angle.

    • you create it I’ll sign it. terrible coverage. very un-natural and obviously a sell out (they are intentionally compromising the quality of their coverage to get that advertising in…shameful)

    • +1 hate that camera angle.

    • Its fucking awful.

  29. sit on the curve

  30. DeRosa looking like DeRosa tonight

  31. a Rasmus walk!!!!!!!! is there a blue moon?

  32. Man, what’s up with Floyd’s throwing hand? Looked like he had a scrape or a rash like eczema on it.

  33. Did anyone scope the old japanese dude behind the plate doing the bullpen motion as ventura walked to the mound haha

  34. Squeeze Play?

  35. we need a huge AB here to get another run

  36. come on Maicer, show us your power!

  37. fuck you Maicer

  38. Just can’t get that big hit…

  39. Dont think I can let this go. Last inning when Buehrle gave up that single up the middle, moron sox color guy (i believe its steve stone) actually went with the “the ball picks up speed” when it hits the turf shit.

I love it when they say things that science has proven impossible.

imagine the unlimited energy we as a world would have if throwing balls on a carpet created energy.

  40. nice play Buerhle

  41. Coulda really used a run or two there.

  42. Great to see 3 quality starts in a row by the Jays pitching staff

  43. damn Boner can’t read a fly ball. scary

  44. Thanks Jack Morris: “Well he has two outs in the sixth inning, so if he gets one more out he’ll be in the seventh inning”

  45. I just hold my breath anytime a ball is hit anywher near Boni

  46. Hey folks – question for you all
What is Romero doing right now? I’ve looked on the Dunedin stats page and he hasn’t thrown a pitch… Is he just sitting in limbo? What happened? Thanks.

  47. Boni is basically switch hitter in name only. His swing is shit from the right.

    • So just checked out his splits on baseball reference and guess what….

much better career hitter from the RIGHT side of the plate.

wtf. shows you what small observations are worth.

      vs RHP as RHB 6 16 15 4 1 0 0 0 72 17 1 4 .267 .313 .333 .646 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 .364 93

      vs LHP as RHB 220 519 473 137 15 8 2 24 31 7 35 110 .290 .336 .368 .704 174 3 0 7 4 0 5 .370

interestingly enough..he’s actually faced right handed pitchers as a right handed batter.

    • So platoon with Davis in RF till Reyes returns. Right?

  48. shut it down ishmael

    • Call me ishmael rogers

      • Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would pitch baseballs about a little and see the FieldTurfy part of the world.

      • Call me Ishmael
        Ishmael is my name
        I served under Captain Ahab
        Out on the Bounding Main

  49. Paid attendance: 15,755 – so says John Lott.

    That’s kinda sad.

    • You’re pretty much preaching to an at home audience, bean.

      Group guilt is not fun.

      • some of us live in the USA, get your asses to the park!

      • I’ll be going to the game on Friday…so I’m contributing something! I can’t afford to go to lots of games – usually I go to about half a dozen per year. Also, I’m too old/cranky to deal with live baseball + the hassle of getting to the dome.

And I’m well aware that this is par for the course for a Monday in April playing the White Sox. I just thought I would mention it as I had not contributed anything this evening. I need my participation badge.

        • You just lost “Miss Congeniality.”

          Try knot-tying.

          • I would never be in the running for Miss Congeniality. Or knot tying. Patience is not a virtue. Or, yknow…having skills + such.

    • thats funny, Wilner said the place “looks about half full” !! There’s a big difference between 15 vs. 25 K

    • Gibbons bullpen management has been stellar so far this year

    • That’s pretty typical for a White Sox game, during a weeknight, in April.

    • Sounds much louder than 15K for some reason.

  50. Sure would be nice to have a lefty masher with plus defense in the OF to come in for Rasmus right now.

Aw who am I kidding? Where wouls we ever find someone like that?

  51. Wonder if Sportsnet got that Stadium Love set ready for all the players not on the 25 man roster? Or do they film the promos for all guys on the 40 man roster? What happens if they trade for someone new?

    • After seeing a promo with Happ in it, it seemed different than the others. It made me wonder if they made his after he got a spot in the rotation.

  52. Ball is just not carrying tonight.

  53. I love it when Pat and Buck make up conversations that players are having.

  54. Its big to win games like this with a watered down lineup.

  55. Never could hop on the Rasmus train as hard as I tried just cant. Wish he woulda went in the Dickey deal with another arm to go along with TDA instead of losing NOSE!!

  56. poor D by DeRosa

  57. Our mascot is sad.

    Now I’m sad.

  58. Come back, Brett.

  59. Fucking DaRosa…..move your friggin’ feet! Basic defense 101 fer crying out loud.

    And now it’s 4-3.

  60. Get your hands out of your pants, Gibbons, and get someone warmed up in the bullpen!

  61. Loup!

  62. Big K, but it would still be a 4-2 game if DeRosa picks that.

  63. Snoop-A-Loup!

  64. That run was more de Rosa’s fault than it was loup

  65. “Cmon Tyler, buddy we need ya” *strikes out* “We got one, we got one back” – Sox commentator

Wish I was making this up.

  66. i’m gonna start taking a shot every time i see that Ramada face painting commercial.

    • You don’t already?! That fucker’s shit-eating grim and fist pump is enough to make me punch myself in the face with Wild Turkey every time…

  67. Once in a while, Colby surprises.

  68. Buck couldn’t believe that Cletus hit a fair ball for a minute.

  69. The jays should be leading this game 8-3 and floyd should have been gone by the 4th. Fuckin garbage lineup today.

  70. Can this team get a friggin hit with RISPPPPPPPPPPP

  71. 150cc of pain reliever

  72. Forever a Kawasakio fan if he singles here, even if he doesn’t I love the guy. He’s a poor man’s Ichiro

  73. Ramada ad! SHOT!

  74. Effin A 42

  75. Was that just me or was the a really awkward cut to the Sportsnet crew?
Uh…something really bad happened in Boston….and the Leafs played…back to the game.

    • “The latest on the Boston… *breaks down weeping*”

“And we’ve got the LATEST NHL SCORES!”

  76. Jansen dealing!

  77. Pitch FX makes the umpire looks like he wants to end it quickly…but I can live with that

  78. Janssen is so amazing.

  79. Janssen, such a boss. Can you believe they were using Cordero over him last year?!

  81. Woooo!

  82. I love Janssens intensity on the mound!!!

  83. Janssen rocks.

  84. Janssen makes coffee nervous.

  85. WOOO!

  86. Sweet! Too bad the season’s over…I’d really want to watch more of this team…

  87. Was it just me or was Janssen even more amped up than usual tonight?

Also getting down 3-0 to the first batter and then coming back to strike him out. #pro

  88. way to go boys, nice win. a win is a win.
loving KC so far this year.

  89. Beauty!

  90. Did Janssen look absolutely dominating in that inning or what?

  91. Sexy Piano Legs does it again!

  92. Okay, JJ is due for a good start tomorrow.

  93. HUGE W

  94. Kawasaki again.. got to love that. good teams win with guys who can fill when they are call on.

  95. Davidi tweets Lawrie will be activated tomorrow.

  96. gratz on the win boys

  97. …..and Santos to DL with triceps strain.

  98. Great win. Good piece at ALE with current pitching stats/ranks thus far. Dead last in ERA, second last in H/9/ERA+. Good review of the game as well if interested.

p.s. bummer news about Sergio Santos
