Toronto Blue Jays v Baltimore Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays will look to rebound from two straight losses in New York in Game 3 of their four game series in the Bronx. The Jays will send left-hander J.A. Happ to the mound against the Yankees ace of the staff, CC Sabathia.  Last night’s spot starter, Aaron Laffey, who was designated for assignment after last night’s game, will be replaced on the roster by right-hander Justin Germano. In four games at Triple-A Buffalo, Germano posted a 6.65 ERA, 3.85 FIP and 5.9 K/9 in 23 innings.

Scuttlebutt:

Brendan Kennedy adds that Germano was added as insurance for the Jays overworked bullpen. He adds that Adam Lind is due back for Sunday’s game.

John Lott writes about the injury situation that has suddenly hit the starting rotation. Brendan Kennedy adds that John Gibbons expects Dickey to make the start Sunday while Gregor Chisholm tweets that Johnson’s MRI came back clean. Still no word on if he can make his next scheduled start however.

Shi Davidi writes about Ricky Romero, (Video evidence from Tony Ambrogio) and how there is no timetable for his return to Toronto.

John Gibbons was asked about the possibility of Brett Lawrie batting leadoff. John Lott tweets that it has been discussed.

  1. I’ve had about enough with the streaming shitballers approach. There are hitters in AAA tearing the cover off the ball and we need another mopup guy?

  2. Maybe we’ll get some decent base running this game…

  3. This team has been awful but yet I keep watching. It’s like a horrible train wreck where you just can’t look away. If there were only a couple of problems like a few good players in slumps or a couple of rough starts I wouldn’t be worried. The problem is about half of their lineup can’t hit at all, their defense is some of the worst in baseball, and they’re already 7.5 games back with no signs of life at all.

  4. I still believe in them. Right guys?

  5. Lind isn’t back until tomorrow? I thought his wife had the baby.

  6. DeRosa as DH? Yuck

  7. Today could be a surprise win. Happ isn’t horrible at Yankee Stadium is he?

As Wilner said last night, the entire Jays lineup cannot continue to underperform at the rates that they have in the first 24 games.

Gregg Zaun is pushing the panic button today. Zaun is ripping the Jays.

Even Dirk is upset with the Jays. ….today.

  8. “It’s still early, it’s still early, it’s still early, and you’re all morons” – a.stoeten

  9. Nice to have a weekend game threat. Thanks Darren.

  10. Jayson Nix batting second. Vernon wells cleanup. Sigh.

    • I wonder what happens when Granderson is ready to come back. If Vernon keeps playing well I assume they still give Granderson his spot back (and maybe platoon Wells with Ichiro) and if it takes him awhile to get back to speed they might actually be worse off with Vernon not playing everyday, imagine that.

  11. DeRosa as a DH. that is fucking brutal. what great depth we have

    • This was the problem with the DeRosa signing. Nothing wrong with taking the flier as a utility guy, but when you’re trotting him out as your DH while Jiminez and Gomez rot in AAA (even understanding that both have major weaknesses), something’s wrong with the picture.

  12. What’s with working hard to get Izturis into every game? Kawasaki at least provides a plus glove and has long grinder at-bats. He is likely a replacement level player, which is all you can ask for in a replacement. Izturis on the other hand looks awful at the plate and in the field.

This looks like the kind of lineup the jays can turn over a few times – got rid of the biggest rally killer in Rasmus. This guy is brutal and breeds NO confidence that he can generate or continue momentum in an inning. Does anyone else expect anything more then an easy out when they see Rasmus at the plate?

  13. Is this the same Nix who didn’t hit shit in Toronto?

    • Yes. He 2 or 3 good games in Toronto. I think he hit a few game winning HR’s. That was the year the Jays were waiting for Lawrie.

  14. The Jays are more of a shitshow than I am!

  15. Seriously, guys — one of the best left-handers in the game is on the mound, that’s why Gibby’s stacked the lineup with right-handed bats and switch hitters. That’s why DeRosa is in there, that’s why Davis is in there.

It’s not like Gibby wakes up and says “Well, DeMarlo, looks like a good day to reanimate DeRosa’s corpse. Crank up the antenna and let’s look for some lightning” just because he feels like it. Kawasaki is a career .138 against LHP, Rasmus .205.

DeRosa is a career .293 against LHP and .286 against Sabathia.

This is neither difficult to figure out nor a bad move on Gibby’s part, FFS.

    • The point is – if you are gonna be getting an 0 – 4 out of that position/lineup spot – you should at least get good defence. Izturis and Kawasaki would likely fare equally as we’ll against CC, might as well have the glove

      • Maicer is a career .267 hitter against lefties and hits .389 against Sabathia with an OPS of .921.

That’s not “equally well as Kawasaki” against Sabathia, that’s “spanks Sabathia’s fat ass all over the park.” It’s not even fucking close.

    • It’s more about roster construction than the platooning.

    • +1. Gibby likes to play the percentages. No problem with that.

    • You’re a breath of fresh air.

  16. Are Buck and Tabler paid to ride on the Yankees’ ballsack? Jesus, stfu already and call the game.

  17. YES network was already rolling out the no-hitter stats.
What the fuck is wrong with this team?

  18. Tabler is unable to form full sentences and yet gets paid to talk…this constantly baffles me.

  19. Another professional at-bat by Derosa. His professionalism is off the charts.

  20. Holy shit the Jays score first in a game!

    #momentum

  21. Even when the Jays score this season it feels like a fail.

  22. Really solid three innings from Happ. You know I’m as pissed as most of you about the team being .375, but the pitching really is significantly better than last year. That’s why things are highly likely to improve.

    But I’m still pissed.

    • Sometimes (like last night) the pitching has sucked, but mostly it’s the hitting and defence that just sh*t the bed.

  23. Boom! Rally killer

  24. Bombista again.

  25. JOSE!!!!!!

  26. See I love it when a fly ball goes into the stands over Wells’ head!

Smells like…oh well never mind what it smells like.

  27. Is it just me or are the hitters slowly starting to look more calm at the plate? Hasn’t meant more wins but that should change soon I hope

  28. Sweet!

  29. Fuuuuck Chicken wing!!

  30. Lady Luck has decided to favour us.

  31. Beautiful!

  32. HAHA! Finally some luck wtf!!

  33. Sabathia is not the same pitcher. He can’t go inside anymore. The gas just isn’t there.

  34. Youkilis is ugly. With beard or without

  35. Walk. Sending a message. Sigh.

    • Some poistive signs this series….looks like laurie, jose, and ee are swinging the bat well….hopefully it rubs off on the rest of the team…

3 innings to go….come on jaaaaaaaaaaays

  36. SHUT THE FUCK UP BUCK, ITS NOT THE “PROFESSIONAL YANKEES” taking walks ITS THE SHITTY PITCHING

  37. FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT TEAM AND I HOPE BUCK GETS PUNCHED IN THE EYE

  38. Ugh.

  39. Fun while it lasted…maybe we should only play 3 innings?

    • In Wii Baseball there is only three innings. And there can be ties. There’s also a mercy rule.

  40. literally handing the entire season away, game by game, the other team doesn’t have to do anything except occasionally make contact

  41. fucking walks – god this is just awful

  42. Nice one, Happ, you fucking sorry turd.

  43. Yup! Cue the Bonifacio miss!

  44. There we go. Hafner sets everything right again. I was feeling slight bit of hope after that inning that needed to be put down ASAP.

  45. When the jays score do they ever come back with a clean defensive inning? I don’t get it

  46. This blows. Fuck you J Hap. Pure 100% bull shit.

  47. Well, that 3-run cushion left in a hurry.

  48. Good Lord, people. Open a fucking beer and relax. Both teams are allowed to score during a game, you know. In fact, it’s encouraged.

We’re not even halfway through yet.

  49. Cue fat CC retiring 12 straight now.

  50. Hay….you guys ready for a tune?…cheer yas right up?

  51. C’mon Rajai. Chop and run.

  52. This team sucks so much

    • Cheers and salutations! What an enriching perspective you have brought to the Drunk Jays Fans weblog. If you have any further insights, please don’t hesitate to input your user comments in the text field below! Thank you for visiting the Drunk Jays Fans weblog!

  53. JesusfuckingChrist….it’s like Groundhog Day over and over again. And not the Groundhog Day where you get hummers from supermodels twice a day….the kind of Groundhog day where you get nut-kicked every time you watch a game.

  54. Missed you bitches. I’m on holidays in Florida, unplugged and imbibing.

  55. Oh for sure

  56. Ah, a first pitch pop up from Wells. I feel like the universe is about to get back into alignment.

  57. Die like a dog Youk.

  58. I feel like singin agin…..”Luck left the Jays team tonight…luck left the Jays team tonight…..hit a couple dingers, give em back in a half inning……luck left the Jays team too-night”….i toldja, cheer ya right up quick like…

  59. So which Yankee ties it up next inning?

  60. That was Lawrie, not you.

  61. …..the tat-man tattoos one….getin ya’ll hopes up.

  62. Keep it up Lawrie….I’m serious, keep it up

  63. And they say the Maple-boner isn’t self-aware.

  64. Good for Happ.

    There, I said it.

  65. Perfect example of what is wrong with this team. First two guys get on. Then bautista, Edwin, and JPA try to hit 500 foot homers in consecutive fashion when a single is an RBI.

    Its simply selfish baseball.

    • I’d prefer Jose and Edwin to not change their approach at all. Keep swinging for the fences. It has worked more often than not.

JPA though? Who knows what the fuck he’s thinking when he gets up to the plate?

    • You don’t try to hit homeruns, you try to repeat your swing. You’ll occasionally see a guy come out of his shoes with a 3-0 green light or down a run in the 9th but those three guys just try to hit the ball hard every at bat.

  66. The good news is that Lawrie,Edwin & bautista are hitting HR’s as well as JPA.

The bats are coming around. Feels like 2010 when the team led the league in HR’s

    • I like how unfailingly optimistic you are. I think I’d usually find it irritating but it’s better than everyone saying the seasons over.

So I’m gonna give you a +1 because I’ve noticed you seem to like them.

      +1

      • Oakville likes LOL’s too.

      • +1 back to you. I am trying to be optimistic. I went through the five stages of grief in the first few weeks of the season, but I am being serene now.

The jays are not the juggernaut video game 99 win team, but statistically they still have a shot at the playoffs & given the past performance of the players, it would be stunning if they finished under 85 wins.

85-90 win means good September baseball.

It’s just a game & there are many worse things that can happen in life.

I am looking forward to the Dome being open, hopefully next weekend when I attend the Mariners game.

Rogers profits came out this week & they are very good, so I doubt they close the chequebook on AA for 2013 & 2014.

MLSE hired the guy from AEG (Kings,Lakers,Galaxy), so I think they may convince Rogers that putting competitive teams on the field “on paper” will keep the fans entertained.

I am very impressed with Baseball central, & the new increased content from Rogers & this blog which has weekend posts.

  67. We need to hit a few more to the warning track

  68. So yesterday we had 10 hits yanks had 6.

we had 3 homeruns. yanks had 1.

I wonder what percentage of the time that statistical breakdown results in a loss for the team with more hits/hr?

  69. We shall now witness how to pull defeat from the jaws of victory

  70. Can ya’ll holdm for 3 more??…..it’s en eternity in Jays-ball am I right?? Just your firendly neighbor to the south chiming in…

  71. Jeesus, Vern tags you guys again…that’s gotta hurt, no??

    • I think it’s nice to see that Vernon Wells has revived his career with the Yankees. As much as I was disappointed in his performance with the Jays, his contract was at FMV with the Jays. He was a good guy for charities etc….

last year, it looked like Wells would be on the bench all year.

I still hate Youklis with his dancing batting style

  72. Come on

  73. Well, maybe not. Way to go, Jays. Rogers on the mound…

  74. Cecil…ugh

  75. Stoeten, please ban this putz. He isn’t even accidentally entertaining.

  76. Rajai Davis likes banana’s. What a fugly route to the ball.

  77. oh nooo Rajia got spooked by the wall

  78. Colby would’ve had that

  79. Why do I even bother to care?

  80. Cletus needs to roam CF.

    • Colby definitively takes better routes to tthe ball than Davis but he also plays so damn shallow he would have never gotten to that ball anyway. All you have to do is look back to yesterdays game when lyle overbay hit a ball that bounced on the front side of the track because Rasmus plays so shallow..so it really wouldn’t have mattered.

      • I beg to differ…but it is debatable.

What I do know is that Rajai’s routes are embarrassing.
He’s lucky he doesn’t trip himself.

        • Colby’s just a better fielder and he would have had that; partly because he reads the ball better off the bat than Rajai; and partly because he takes a better route. Dont forget that he doesnt get to call his position. I’m guessing he gets some leeway but I believe it’s Rivera who sets the defences.

  81. Can it get any worse?

  82. Greetings friends, I have showed up for the Yankees and not your BJ’s

  83. LOL

  84. Oh for fuck’s sake…..EVERY SINGLE GAME someone fucks up…and it costs us.
Ray-fucking-Charles could have taken a better route to that ball. Jesus.

  85. I don’t really know what to say anymore. I might have to tune out for a while. It’s just too frustrating to give a damn about the fortunes of this team at the moment.

  86. ….aaahem…test…test….check…check…one….check one two…..check

  87. Listening to Buck and Tabby i think is more painful than losing

  88. Gotta love how when past their prime players go to the yankees and regain their prowess.

Because they are the yankees and we are the blue jays.

  89. Sigh.

  90. I have a bottle of 12 year aged Jameson in a class case with the sign “In case of emergency break glass”.

    My hands are getting twitchy.

  91. Third game in a row where jays get ahead..yankee starter has nothing…and jays lose

  92. 8 pitch 8th for CC

back to singing for the fence….

  93. SPOILER: I will not be showing up for the Jays for the remainder of the game.

  94. Time for a long break from this team.

  95. If this game stays the same, 8 of the Jays last 9 losses will have been by 1 or 2 runs.

  96. FUCK I switched over to the Jays game when the bulls were down 10 points with like 2 minutes left.

It went to 3OT and the Bulls won.

  97. Wells: 309 .374 .580

    Hafner: .309 .433 .727

    Stewart: .308 .357 .423

    Who saw this coming?

    • Hafner still had something in the tank.

      Stewart’s streak won’t last.

I’m agnostic about Wells for some reason. He’s gonna hit some bombs in that bandbox.

      • Yeah but he could’ve waited til they left town.

      • Not out of the realm of possibility that all three could become good players once again. It’s just the unlikeliness of all this good fortune happening for one team.

Prime seems to last until about age 40 if you’re a good yankee hitter.

  98. new idea. Instead of fire Gibby chants. How bout fire AA.?

    • Gibbons is a plain ol’ shitty manager. Should never have hired him back.

The way I see it, the coaching staff shoulders a lot of blame for the underperformance – not all of it – but the way that the Jays have played must surely have something to do with motivation and/or preparation.

  99. i sense a rally…..we will come back!

  100. I am feeling a lot better now about this loss, it’s early
