Munenori Kawasaki’s post-game interview on Sunday topped off what was one of the greatest games so far this season for the Jays. With English being Kawasaki’s second language, he had to use a translation book to convey his thoughts to the Toronto fans.

Unfortunately, he was then soaked with Gatorade, and that translation book became a casualty. We recovered 3 pages from his translation book, with notes about Toronto, the Jays, and his personal life:

  1. Awesome. Scott, Stoeten can apparently take a joke as your still here. Congrats

  2. lol thats just awesome stuff

  3. think he can play 2nd or 3rd?

    • yes to 2nd, no to third

      • Kawasaki has played third before, in Japan, but he doesn’t have a great arm, so he’s better at SS or 2B. Trade-off between DeRosa and Kawasaki at 3B is between arm and range. If Izturis would stop dropping the ball on routine plays, he’d be the middle ground between DeRosa and Kawasaki in terms of arm+range.

If Lawrie’s going to be out for any amount of time, against righties, the Jays have to be considering going with Bautista at 3B and Gose at RF. Gives them the best chance to win.

  4. Is this real?

  10. what’s the chair/leg spread reference?

  11. Obviously he would have English translations for things he’ll say to other people …but why would he have English translations of the notes he writes for himself?

  12. This is awesome stuff.

  18. Money money money

  19. AA with olney today

  20. Super awesome funny! To answer the question of “is it real?” this is what you need to know. A Japanese person trying to speak in English would either (i) write out the hiragana/katakana for pronunciation assistance followed by English or (ii) write out the kanji-kana combo followed by hiragana/katakana. Without everything written out in kana, they would have a much harder time with the pronunciation. A kanji-English combo is highly unlikely as it provides the speaker with the least amount of pronunciation assistance.

  21. So Lawrie on the dl means pitcher sent down and who called up?

  22. Roman Ortiz warming up!? Have they already conceeded the game

  23. Hilarious!

  25. Swish.

  26. I don’t know why, but the Drake one fucking killed me.

  27. Merely seeing those writings I realize how important translation services are. For me, I can only read written English so it is hard for me to decipher those writings that are alien to what I know. I really wonder what does that mean.
