Cleveland Indians v Toronto Blue Jays

The Jays look to muster some offence in order to save their two game mini-series with the Junior Varsity Giants after last night’s frustration, and I think they’ve found just the right man for the job: Barry Zito, who they tuned for eight runs on twelve hits back on May 14th at Rogers Centre.

He faces R.A. Dickey, who… yeah.

Shitballers!

Scuttlebutt

Um… whole lot of nothing here.

  1. LF- ✓
CF-✓ (I believe, and he’s demonstrating it often)
    RF -✓
3B -✓ (just gotta wait for it)
SS-✓ (JR will be such a sight for sore eyes)
2B-✓(one of them will figure it out, likely Bonifacio)
    1B-✓
C- ✓( I believe that JPA would be a lot better as a 100 games a year guy, and Thole is a decent 60 games guy, it will happen)
    DH-✓ (Davis and Lind)
Bench-✓ (Derosa +Davis as PH vs. LHP, Lind and JPA on of days as PH for need a homer situations, Iztuis and or/MK for bunts, both Gose and Davis as legs when the SP allows a smaller pen)

SP-✓ (the personal is fine, just gotta be patient, yesterday was a taste)
    RP-✓

Stay on the boat. Get the negative nit picks and worm holes out of your mind, this team is gonna make it’s way back this year.

  2. Jack Morris told a live television audience that there was no cheating “in the old days.” I don’t know either.

  3. Derosa has been great this year. I bet he has given more than they expected. I know people on this blog like to shit on him but hes been one of the better bench players. Much better than the shittacular iz/boni combo.

    • I like him, always have. Was a solid player for the Cubs when they went to the playoffs a few times under Piniella. And I like the contributions he’s made here. I expected him to be Vizquel without the farewell tour on company payroll attitude and instead he’s looked okay, especially against lefties.

But, as much as I like the guy, he’s a 38 year old part-time player-mentor hitting clean-up for a team that is gunning for a title. Coming off serious wrist surgery that was going to end his career until the Jays called. What’s wrong with that picture?

      • Oh, he definitely shouldnt be hitting cleanup. Neither should jpa. But my point was he has provided more than anyone expected.

        • Gibbons likes to play matchups, and having DeRosa bat cleanup against Zito was all about putting a guy in the lineup where he could do the most damage. DeRosa’s been hitting over .300 against lefties all season, and with power, too. Plus, he’s red-hot, with an OBP well over .400 in the last 10 games and a huge home run in the last series.

I have zero issues with that. It’s not like DeRosa will be in that spot all year long.

          • Nothing wrong with it at all. He’s got decent power, not great and he’s a smart hitter. Rather have him than JPA any day. And let’s face it, after JB (0 for 30 – ish) and EE, who is there?

  4. That second knuckler barely made it to the plate. And then juiced up to 78 for the K. Great start.

  5. fucking sneaky afternoon game

    you just made my DAY

    go Jays

  6. That inning was what I was expecting in the offseason.

  7. Holy shit, nice catch.

  8. Only 10 games back, of 500!

  9. wow rasmus, blanco and dickey.

what are the chances those 3 get even 1 hit?

  10. Instead of calling Encarnacion “double E”, can we start calling him “E Squared”? Much cooler….

  11. palindrome!

  12. What the hell is going on with Bautista? 2 for his last 30?? I expect slumps like that out of J.P., Rasmus, (the old) Lind, Boneface, Kawasaki, Lawrie…hell anyone other than Bautista, Reyes and EE. How is this happening???

    • Its .. its baseball …

    • Shit happens.

    • It happens. Good players go through slumps. Right now im noticing he is chasing bad pitches, but he should figure it out.

    • Judging from being at the park in SD (rather than watching pitch location on TV) it looks like he’s hitting a lot of soft liners (esp to right) rather than crushing balls. Probably he’s having trouble adjusting to being pitched outside in big parks and it’s thrown him off a bit overall.

  13. Deja Vu

  14. This is no good, from Olneys blog:

Melky Cabrera was suspended for the use of performance-enhancing drugs in 2012 and lost about a third of his salary, or about $1.8 million of the $6 million that he made. Then, when he went into free agency, he signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to “Outside The Lines,” Cabrera now faces a 100-game suspension, meaning that he could lose about $4.4 million in salary. So in the end, Melky Cabrera could be busted twice in two years — and still walk away with $15.8 million for his work in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Does crime pay in Major League Baseball?

    Heck yeah, it does.

  15. It’s well established that Blanco knows how to work a blade, so with the sunshine in San Fran today, don’t be surprised if you see Blanco use his butterfly knife to flash the signs to Dickey. I guess the blades shimmer a bit in the sun and Dickey finds it kinda trippy and spiritual. Also, it provides Blanco an extra opportunity to refine his blade skills

  16. lmao dropped it down 67 to strikeout Zito. I’ve missed Dickey’s last couple of starts, when did he start working in these ultra slow knucklers?

    • Even though the numbers havent completely shown it yet, his last few starts look to me like dickey is warming up and getting into a bit of rhythm. Not only has he been working in the slower ones, but been throwing the 78 – 80 MPH ones too.

He has not been good yet this year, but (maybe its the eternal optimist in me) I see him starting to throw the ball a lot better.

    • he’s always changed speeds as far as i know. a knuckleball in the 60s is not that crazy if you look back at others that threw the pitch. I saw Charlie Hough throw 58 mph ones before.

  17. I think I unjinxed this by posting in yesterday’s threat first.

    But perfect game, right? Right?

  18. Lind gets 2 off another Lefty. Is it time to start letting him hit southpaws with regularity again?

So far this year, he’s torched his previous 3-yr total against Righties thanks to whatever the fuck he’s doing now. Who’s to say he won’t destroy his previously piss-poor results against Lefties, as well?

  19. Did Buck just say “Boats and hoes”?

  20. You won’t see him on the official stats page because he is a couple dozen at-bats short of qualifying, but Adam Lind is fifth in the AL in OPS among players with more than 100 ABs.

Well done to him and to Gibby for keeping him away from (most) lefties.

  21. DICKEY!!

  22. This game is why the hashtag #DickeyTheBest exists

  23. DickeytheBEST!!!!

  24. That was amazing. Dickey the best?

  25. Blanco hasn’t run that much since those prison soccer matches down in Venezuela

  26. LMAO, what to do if your team sucks ass at hitting?!? Do the job yourself! Love it.

  27. That was easily one of my favourite plays of this season.

  28. Dickey: “alright fuckers im making my own run support today.”

  29. Wow, just the replay of Blanco running. He was flying

  30. E squared is up….

  31. Encarnacion and Bautista double steal. OH YEAH!

  32. Bautista scares the shit out of me on the basepaths.

  33. Here’s why Dickey needs Blanco as his personal catcher: Blanco’s the only other guy as badass as he is. Blanco does his thing with shivs, Dickey with baseballs (and bats, apparently).

  34. Fucking right!

  35. We just need to face Zito clones all year. We would score 8 runs a game and go 162 and O.

  36. Fuckin dese bitches up!

  37. A few guys in the Jays lineup could take a lesson from that at bat by derosa. Don’t swing for the fence, know the situation and play to your strengths.

  38. Stat on the Giants broadcast. Dickey has one his last 24 games when given a 2 run lead. That’s unbelievable.

  39. What’s this thing where our starting pitchers don’t have to give up 5 or 6 runs each time out?

  40. I thought the game started @ 4:30pm. Was planning on being fashionably late, not offensively late. Ooops. Je suis desolee.

Rest assured, I was in the boat the whole time.

  41. Attaboy Cletus

  42. Colby totally 2013′d that play.

  43. If Dickey had gotten that one as well, he’d need to tell the guys in the dugout to GET ON MY LEVEL.

  44. How could Paula Abdul possibly be relevant to anything?

  45. One time, when he was in prison, Blanco got stabbed by an inmate with an AIDS needle. Blanco just shook it off – he knows that, no matter how well you can work a blade, sometimes in life you’re gonna get cut. You just deal with your wounds like a man and survive to stab another day

  46. Don’t fucken do this to me Dickey. I had already sworn you off. I don’t need you to throw a one-hitter to tease me back in…

  47. E squared is up!

  48. E Squared…✓

  49. Why is Melky out?

  50. This is what cy young dickey is supposed to look like.

  51. I actually taped the game to watch tonight, sounds like a great game

  52. First 3-1 count all game?

  53. Lind is now hitting .500 against lefties….Reverse Splits!

  54. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

    ….

    ….

    Oh well.

  55. Awesome performance Dickster!

  56. we give them the Johnson and then we give them the DICKey–Yes.Put it on the board.
    Out here in the fields…

  57. Givin’ em the Dick

  58. Dickey has a better plan at the plate than JP does.

  59. Still Dickey the best.

  60. I’m here to keep putting in a plug for Izzy (as he’s very unpopular here). He can actually play the infield properly. I like good defense.

  61. Dickey/JJ belong in the NL (AAAA).

  62. I’d like to think this is the win that will get them rolling, but I’ve thought that 24 other times also. I now know better.

  63. ✓ To FamousAmazingGuy for using ✓ so much today. I think that’s my new +1 system now.

  64. For someone who lives somewhere as beautiful as California, you sure spend a lot of your free time inside, trolling these poor Blue Jays die hards. Couldn’t/shouldn’t you be outside enjoying yourself once in a while? Just wondering dude.

In all seriousness, though, for the most part your comment are right on the mark, and if not they’re close to it, but to say JJ and RAD are AAAA pitchers who belong in the NL is ridiculous.

What a disappointing season so far, but at least it means I won’t have to waste the summer going out of my way to watch every game.

  65. Losing a couple of one-run games to the Padres is one thing, but giving up 11 runs to the ‘Stros? Bahaha

  66. Missed the game ona counta the early start…DidI read RAD is now throwing the Eephus pitch?

Shades of Oil Can Boyd !!

  67. Alright! Today I am a Blue Jays fan!

    Woohoo!

    Tomorrow? Well, let’s see.

  68. Watching the Dickey butcher-boy play again, that is some pretty impressive hand-eye to transition so quickly from showing bunt and still manage to stroke it fair down the line. I reckon most pitchers would have hit it foul or swung right through it.

    #DickeyTheBest

  69. Honestly, as miserable as this team has been all season (despite the juggernaught now emerging) my least favorite thing about every Jays season is FUCKING OFF DAYS!
