Chart explanation

- Josh Johnson’s line: 7.1ip, 5h, 0er, 10k, 2bb, 106 pitches, 18 swinging strike, 76 game score, 1.15FIP.

- Jorge de la Rosa’s line: 7.0ip, 1h, 0er, 3bb, 4k, 95 pitches, 7 swinging strikes, 76 game score, 3.20FIP.

- Without question this was Josh Johnson’s finest start as a Blue Jay to date, mowing through an aggressive Rockies lineup with a lot of swinging strikes. He let runners get into scoring position in the 2nd, 5th, and 6th, but he managed to find some groundballs and strikeout pitches each time.

- Johnson handed the ball to Brett Cecil with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 8th. Cecil got the most important out of the game in a Carlos Gonzalez line drive that was hit directly at Adam Lind at first, and induced a ground ball from Todd Helton to end the inning. Cecil had retired 25 straight batters before intentionally walking Michael Cuddyer to set up the Helton grounder, so we’ll cut him some slack and say he’s retired the last 26 guys he’s attempted to face.

- After the rush of Cecil getting out of the jam in the top of the 8th, Rajai Davis led off the bottom 8th with a single and stole 2nd (12) before Colby Rasmus walked. Maicer Izturis broke the game open with a bloop single to left that Rasmus read perfectly to score on standing up.

- Prior to the Izturis single J.P. Arencibia tried unsuccessfully to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but did manage a 5-foot dribbler that accomplished the same thing with a full swing. Gibby had a conversation with him in the dugout afterwards, and whether it was to express frustration or a sign had been blown it would sure be interesting to hear what was said.

- The Jays swooped in and stole this game after having an off-night through 7 innings. Davis was the first and only hitter to reach scoring position during the entire game for the Jays and they only managed 3 hits total (all singles, two by Maicer).

- Cabrera (2), Encarnacion, and Rasmus each drew walks.

- The 1-through-5 hitters went a combined 0-for-13. Mark DeRosa hit 5th and the team still won.

- Casey Janssen threw 16 pitches to collect his 15th save of the season.

- Travelling from Texas to Toronto and playing without a day off isn’t easy, so the light night offensively is fairly excusable and this win actually feels a lot better than it looks on paper.

- For all the flak normally received for being a bad baseball town, the crowd was electric last night. Maybe something to do with the exciting finish and good performance in an entertaining game?

- As far as I can tell, nothing exceptionally giffey happened.

- The (33-36) Blue Jays win their 6th straight and move within 3 games of .500. The projected match-up is Esmil Rogers (3.94FIP, 0.3fWAR) v Jeff Francis (4.71FIP, 0.4fWAR).

  1. Crowd being electric is directly attributable to the “half closed” position of the roof. The home plate side of the bowl was turned into an amphitheatre of sorts and it was noticeably louder at all times, even during the between inning big screen games.

    • I never considered that but I suspect that you’re right.

    • The half-open rooof was kinda nice and I can’t remember another time it was done. It did improve the sound level between the baselines for sure without that echoey/cavernous effect when the whole roof is closed. Would’nt mind seeing it again for night games.

    • Any idea why they did this?

      • They were calling for rain initially. I believe it was open half way in order to minimize the closing time if it began raining.

  2. I was at the game last night and it was an exciting game, despite all of the non-scoring. Josh Johnson deserves all the credit for this win.

  3. All-around satisfying win. Big day for Maicer, nice that there’s guys stepping up each night. Fun to get on a roll like this and just see where it goes. It has to end sometime, but hey let’s not make it tonight. Go Esmil!

  4. I just want to say that I could watch Rasmus run the bases all day long. If there’s a better base runner in the league, I’d like to know. He always gets perfect reads, and it seems like he’s halfway to a base after his first 3 strides – he just glides. I guess I’ve gotten to the point where I no longer expect him to be an MVP candidate like his rookie season hinted at. He’s an asset to the team, even if he is striking out 190 times a year and not walking much.

    • Rasmus is one of the best players in the league when he’s running the bases, tracking a fly ball, or contacting a pitch.

It’s just all the fucking times he misses that stick in my craw.

    • Well he does have power and walks a little so i dont mind him in the lineup even if he strikes out a lot. Hes still a better hitter and overall player than jpa.

    • He’s also comfortably in the top half of all CF’s in terms of OPS. I’ll take that.

    • He seemed to get a CF’s read on Izturis’s hit, just brilliant.

  5. The boat’s getting crowded all of a sudden, no?
Classic pitcher’s duel last night – both teams playing well (especially that kid on third base for the Rockies. Only 22…man, he might be some kind of good in MLB when he starts shaving regularly)
Glad the team’s found a way to win without relying on the the long bomb.

    • is it just me or does anyone else cringe when you look at guys like arenado or machado then think about lawrie…

      • Maybe others cringe when they see Lawrie barehanded a slow roller or beat out an infield hit?

        • I cringe at all the twitchiness at the plate and the giant swing – leading up to a pop-up or a two-hopper to second base…..yet I love that teeth-bared, pedal-to-the-metal hustle down the first-base line.

          • I cringe at your lack of faith and patience.

          • Lawrie has a ton of talent and is 23yr old. If he’s willing to work on his weakness and embrace some change, he’ll be a monster and a big part of a Toronto run. If he’s not willing to make changes, he’ll drift around from team to team for years as multiple organizations take their shot at “fixing” him. Really, its all up to him.

            • Why are there no comments about Lawrie “hotdogging it” resulting in his ankle injury? He tried to use his momentum on the slide to pop up standing on second. Not nice.

  6. lets hope the guys got some rest tonight and can find them bats. have a really good shot at keeping this going.

  7. The crowd noise was all me, banging chairs from the 500 level with a bunch of brazilians. hah

  8. “Davis was the first and only hitter to reach scoring position during the entire game for the Jays”

Correction: Rasmus also reached second in the 8th, and he wound up scoring from there on the Izturis single.

  9. CANT WAIT FOR MASSHOLE SERIES. JENNY DELL FROM NESN IS SO HOT.

    • STATISTICALLY BAUTISTA MAY HAVE HAD SHITTIEST GAME, BUT DE ROSA WAS BY FAR THE BIGGEST MEATY CUNT LIABILITY. AUTOMATIC OUT AND SHITTY DEFENSE BY AN OLD SHITTY PLAYER WHO CLEARLY FAILED IN HIS PRIMARY PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVE WHICH WAS TO BLESS BRETT LAWRIE WITH A SHRED OF HUMILITY. BRETT LAWRIE IS A CANCER. MARK DE ROSA TIME TO GO HOME.

      • GIBBONS PROBABLY TOLD JPA THAT HE IS A PIECE OF SHIT FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO PERFORM A FUNDAMENTAL SKILL OF BASEBALL WHEN THE TEAM NEEDED IT MOST. JPA THIS GREEN ANGRY BIRD, AMOEBA-LOOKING ASS MOTHERFUCKER.

        • PS CASEY JANSSEN WILL BE TRADED TO THE DETROIT TIGERS. ONLY THING HOLDING BACK TIGERS FROM A WORLD SERIES IS THEIR DIARRHEA FUCKING BULLPEN. AND ILITCH HAS GIVEN DOMBROWSKI CARTE BLANCHE.

        • It’d be easier to read your comments if you stopped yelling.

      • You clearly didn’t catch DaRosa’s neat snag of a throw into the runner at first. You also missed a few gems over the weekend by that “shitty old player”. You’ve missed the 20-odd rbi too, apparently.
You’re obviously a dickwad fucking troll who’d rather bitch like an old fishwife instead of just ShuttingTFU, enjoying the game, and maybe turning your fucking capslock off so people wouldn’t get a migraine reading your drivel.

        • he’s right though…jenny dell is hot

        • SO NEAT, AN MLB PLAYER CAN CATCH. STAY THIRSTY YOU DE ROSA CUM GUZZLER OR ILLEGITIMATE CHILD OF HIS FROM A TRIPLE A AFFILIATE TOWN. ONLY DE ROSA GEM IS THE DE ROSA PEARL NECKLACE HE GIVES YOU IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT BEFORE THE GAMES.

          • Why aren’t you in school? Did 7th grade get out early? Or did you tell Mom you weren’t feeling well today, so you could beat off all morning – or post useless bullshit all day?
Fine, you don’t like..well, most everyone on the team, it seems – but don’t act like a juvenile douchebag who thinks he’s a bigshot because he uses big dirty words.

            • LOL “EVERYONE ON THE TEAM” = DEROSA, LAWRIE AND JPA?? SORRY I FALL ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT (FOR YOU) CONCERNING ARGUABLY THE TWO MOST CONTROVERSIAL PLAYERS ON THE ROSTER. DEROSA IS GARBAGE. AND NOTHING AGAINST JANSSEN, JUST SAYING HE WOULD PROBABLY BE VERY TEMPTING TO THE TIGERS, WHO GET ASS RAMMED BY VALVERDE INCOMPETENCE ON A REGULAR BASIS. THEIR TEAM WAR IS LIKE 60+, WHY NOT UPGRADE SO THAT IT ALL ISN’T UNDONE BY BEDSHITTING PAPA GRANDE. ALSO, FUCK YOU.

    • Careful with your Linguism, you could get throat cancer.

      • I WOULD EAT CATHERINE ZETA JONES IN HER PRIME EVERY NIGHT DESPITE THE SPECTRE OF TREATABLE THROAT CANCER. WORTH. GO WATCH THAT FUCKING ZORRO MOVIE OR THE ONE WHERE SHE SLIPS UNDER THE LASER BEAM AND TELL ME YOU WOULDN’T.

        • ohhhh no sorry, the answer we were looking for was “what is entrapment”, “entrapment”. Cunning linguist is a douche for $400

      • In his dreams, maybe.

        • “fastball”, YOU CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S GOING ON. GET A FLEX PACK FOR REAL LIFE.

          • I guess not…..I’m not on the same medication as you.
Lawrie can be polarizing, but you can’t ignore his talent. JPA…well, just when you think he’s a total POS, he comes through with a couple of dingers. DaRosa – well, he’s there for some infield spot-duty…if Lawrie was active, DaRosa would be playing one game out of five.
In conclusion, I can’t deliberately kill off enough of my own brain cells to continue this conversation.

            • Just boo a troll and move on. This all caps guy is the same person, and he sucks.

Make me laugh already, you incompetent fucking troll – that’s your job, bitch.

              Oh and mandatory: Boooooooooooooooooooo

          • CL, you need to STFU.

            • fastball, BK, agony buffalo, Karl Sagan ON THE RECEIVING END OF A JPA, BRETT LAWRIE AND MARK DE ROSA BUKAKKE. OH AND LET’S THROW IN HENTGEN SOMETHING TELLS ME HE’S THROWN HIS HAT INTO A FEW BUKAKKES DURING THE PARADE YEARS.

              • MORGAN C = ALSO THERE

                • Nothing like the voice of experience, eh? Seems to have more than a passing familiarity with that particular fetish.

                • Y’know Prince, I think you’re the same guy as Cunning Linguist.
Who, btw, is not cunning at all. In fact he’s a complete fucking
                  adolescent imbecile.

  10. Zuber, you’re alive! Nice recap.

  11. Jays must be relevant again if these posts of awesomeness are happening again.

    We missed you, Zuber.

  12. Didn’t we have two runners reach scoring position?

  13. Anyone else starting to feel a little superstitious on this streak? Trying not to do anything differently so we keep this thing rolling til at least 0.500.

    • I’ve been wearing the same underwear for six days.
I think people are starting to notice.
They’re standing a couple of steps further away.
      The sacrifice is worth it.
I’ll take one for the team.

      • Just keep repeating….”Dirty side in the back, crusty side in the front”.

        • Ewwww lol you guys! NO!
See that’s the difference between men and women.

          • Why? Because at the end of the day, we’re all still juveniles at heart – who giggle at farty armpit noises and think the Stooges are comedy gold? Because we have a very liberal interpretation of the 5-second rule regarding food on the floor? Because we consider showering, shaving and other forms of personal hygiene as mere concessions to polite society?

    • Don’t talk about it! You’re jinxing it.

  14. That was a good game to watch.. even better to see a win.. more wins please!

  15. PREETTY SURE ADAM LIND DEFENSE WIZARD IS GIFFEY

  16. Yeah, probably one of the best games so far this season. I agree, nice to see them win without a long ball.

  17. Great win and I expect to see the Jays tee-off against Jeff Francis tonight.

  18. True story: I was at the game last night and was in a box right next to Anthopoulos and Beeston. I overheard them guaranteeing to their guests (one of whom was Robbie Alomar) that Reyes would be back by the weekend. But that’s not even the best part. I showed Beeston the GIF of Edwin taking the parrot for a walk, and he fucking LOVED it… He laughed his ass off then asked where it was from… I told him it was from a site called “Drunk Jays Fans”, and he replied “more like Drunk Jays Executives!”
    BEESTON. THE. BEST.

    • I really hope this is true and wish there was a way you could verify it. If I was near those people I would taken a picture with them. Did you?

I totally believe the Reyes thing though. Based on the highlights they showed this morning of him playing yesterday, he’ll be back very very soon.

    • No one will be surprised to see this happen, and right at the right time too. If he can get onbase like he normally does, then the runs are going to start to pile up, and Melky will get some help with him on because every pitcher and catcher in the league will be focused on if Reyes is going to 2nd or 3rd or HOME!!!

      • Melky will be batting 5th when Reyes returns. Bautista will be staying in the 2 spot.

        • i would do reyes- bautista-lind-EE

if a team is going to burn a lefty reliever in late innings to face lind, i want EE on deck to make sure they only use him on one batter.

if it goes lind-cabrera-rasmus, the reliever will be able to stay in.

        • We will see

          by going with
          Reyes
          Milky
          JoeyBats
          EE
          Lind

you dont really change another other then adding a lot of OBP and Speed infront of whats already working.

and a lead off man is only given 1 lead off per game as a for sure thing. So makes sence to just push everyone down 1 spot. Joeybats still gets into the first Inning, and with Reyes and Melky infront, chances are EE too.

          • meant to add, doesn’t it make more sence to have 2 chances of someone onbase when Joey gets up to the plate?

        • why is melkey guaranteed to bat 5th? id drop him behind rasmus. melkey is a singles hitting non walking gimp right now. colby has much more power, more speed, similar ability to get on base.

      • #firstworldproblems

Hey, I wonder if Lawrie is ever going to be healthy and contribute to this team? THAT would be a fuckin bonus!

    • Not that I doubted your story, but it was just confirmed that Jose is expected back this weekend. The season might not be too early, but it’s still not too late

    • I so want this to be true that I’m gonna tell me inner cynic so go stuff himself and just believe it. Sort of like when a girl tells you, you’re the best she’s ever had.

  19. I’ll be honest, I was having a hard time getting on board with the idea of “flirting with .500 when Reyes gets back” based on how things were looking in May. But now it is legit.

And now they seem to be pressing less.

Man it will be good to see Jose and Anger back on that side of the infield. Just sad to see Sake go, imagine how things would’ve gone without him and Boneface playing infield every day.

  20. Macier was due for some luck, that guy has lined out more than anyone on this team.

  21. I’m quite enjoying the team’s defense lately. Remember when infield grounders had a 50/50 chance of being an out

  22. I really wish Stoeten would cull some of the profanity laced comments, that are obviously typed by horny 17 yr. olds. I know, people have their right to express themselves, but lets at least try and keep it somewhat civil. This site has a number of good commenters that I enjoy reading. I welcome their insite. Thats why I come back, not for the porn.

    • Your meds, take them

    • Well, I am not changing my name for fuck sake (FFS) and I cannot remember when I was 17. Nothing wrong with pointed speak-it is a free for all blog for fuk sake

    • @Stay in the Box: here is your tampon since you’re obviously a bloody pussy.

    • Well……that didn’t go as planning now did it?

but hey, what did you expect from a site called…..DRUNK jays fans?

Where the blogger uses the F….Fuck word more then Bautista does while watching playback of the blown ball calls after a game.

  23. We just got a shout-out by Griffin in his Jays chat – take a look at this little nugget, responding to someone who liked the in-game experience last night.

“That’s nice to see a reaction like that because all you ever hear about if the drunk jays fans and how obnoxious they are. And the intoxicated people at the park too.”
    Griffin – 12:50pm

  24. What a turnaround! 3 games under never felt so good!

  25. World War Z
    Zubers back!
Can only be a good omen.

Francis you slop balling Jamie Moyer-wannabe, tonight you get scorched for 8 earned.

  26. Hopefully Jeff Francis sucks again

  27. This excitement is getting me sick. The Jays are still 3 games under .500, AA is still telling puppet Gibby what the lineup is, JP is still a mediocre catcher., Lind is on acid…… calm down everyone!
