The Jays, after a thrilling victory last night, look to walk out of Cleveland as series winners today, and have a pretty decent shot of doing so if the good R.A. Dickey shows up. It doesn’t hurt that Cleveland will send Danny Salazar to the hill to make his big league debut, either.

At least, I think it doesn’t hurt. Carson Cistuli wrote about him in The Fringe Five yesterday at FanGraphs, acknowledging him as a fringe prospect, but also noting that he has the highest strikeout rate of any qualified starter in Double- or Triple-A, and a 49:13 K/BB rate. Maybe that spells trouble for the Jays, but… fuck that, amiright! Let’s do this!

Scuttlebutt

Cue pointless crying over someone nobody knows a damn thing about: Mike Wilner tweets that he had a long chat with Alex Anthopoulos today, and the GM says that the club does not expect to sign first round pick Phil Bickford. Not because of money, he says, which… really? Something medical could be it, I guess. But my first thought was that maybe they held firm on their number because they didn’t want to dip into the pool of extra dollars they created in order to snag Brentz, Tellez, et. al. And that this was maybe the plan all along, either getting him cheap or getting a comp pick for a reportedly strong 2014 draft (11th overall), while still signing a bunch of high end talent regardless.

On the other hand, Jim Callis tweets that he’s still not convinced the Jays definitely won’t sign Bickford. So… perhaps AA was just using Wilner, and whatever other local media he’s speaking to, as an instrument of posturing towards Bickford’s advisors? Intrigue!

MORE SCUTTLEBUTT FORTHCOMING! EVENTUALLY! OR MAYBE NOT!

  1. John ‘Big League’ Gibbons wanders out to close the barn door now that the horses have all bolted.

  2. Just throw in it out there: my fall back team is Tampa Bay.How fucked up am I ?

  3. WTF was that, Rajai?!?!

  4. Managers losing lots of games this series. It was obvious to just about everyone that Masterson had lost it yesterday. Couln’t find the strikezone to save his life. Same as Dickey. I’m all for letting pitchers get out of jams, but when it’s clear they’ve lost it, you’re not doing anybody any favors by letting them try to get out of it.

Dickey wasn’t just walking guys, he was walking guys with pitches a foot off the plate.

    • I really expected more plate discipline from reyes with his career obp. Kind of disappointed in that aspect of his game.

  5. Yikes Rajai

  6. Great, the Jays actually made the Native Americans’ starter into Luis Tiant. Sigh…

  7. Kawasaki does the stutter step thing all the time. Love how the announcers are acting like its the first time he’s done it.

  8. I am so ashamed of myself.

  9. jays batters look like they should try playing cricket the way they swing at balls in the dirt.

  10. That swing and miss by rajai (that would have made it 3-1) was perhaps one of the 5 worst pitches to ever be swung at.

  11. this is just painful

  12. what a gongshow…….

  13. Some things are just not meant to be.

    Sigh.

  14. You guys can blame gibby all you want but the offense stinks again. They should have beat up this salazar fucker. Im annoyed by how our lineup has way too many free swingers that get themselves out.

    • Plenty of blame to go around, but the offense is just not going to be on all the time. THat’s reality.

Sometimes you need to rely on good pitching to keep you into close games and win you some you probably don’t deserve, and Gibby was in exactly that position. Who knows what would’ve happened if he had brought in a fresh arm that can throw strikes, but leaving Dickey in was pretty much a GUARANTEE that what happened would happen.

You can’t make what is clearly hte wrong call, and then be like “well, if the offense had shown up, we wouldn’t have been in this position in the first place” which of course is true. But the fact is, he WAS in that position, the positino where he had to make the unpopular call.

  15. Put that play in the 2013 jays time capsule

  16. Wow, why are they running out oliver again?

Only to diminish his trade value further.

    FUCK!

    • That was Bautista’s ball not Oliver’s.

But I agree on the Oliver trade sentiment. What can we get from Texas? Would they part with Kinsler to #freeprofar at second?

  17. Another shitty, sloppy, uninspired game. At least, I didn’t have to do any work for 2.5 hours.

  18. Although it feels like time wasted when they loose

    • It’s even worse when they lose (Christ, when did North America collectively lose the ability to spell the word, LOSE?).

  19. I’m always wondering what Mottola has preached to guys as a batting coach.
Is it a flawed philosophy (as demonstrated by our fucking uselessness of late)…or does everyone go brain-dead all of a sudden when they get into the batter’s box??

As the great philosopher, Mike Tyson once commented, “Everyone’s got a game-plan when you get in the ring. Then you start getting punched in the mouth”.

  20. Atta boy Clete

  21. So, if they’d pulled Dickey before the 6th, then not used Oliver (who seriously sucks shit), we’d have just taken the lead

  22. Wow, has the whole world just gone Topsy-Turvy?

  23. Good walk JP!

  24. Guys, JPA looks like a professional hitter the last two weeks.

  25. Redemption Narrative baby

  26. Looks like Perez has lost it…I love this guy. Jays have eaten his luch before.

  27. Pinch run boni for JPA? Why not?

  28. Oh man now there’s a faint glimmer of hope.

  29. another day, another boring as shit loss.

    go jays.

    • Fuck off and eat shit.

If you hate the Jays so much get off this fucking Forum

      • You are not a true Jays fan unless you do HATE the Jays when they stink.

      • Well, in all fairness, it is getting harder and harder to keep hope alive. They have lost every series except the one with Minnesota since the 11 win game streak ended.

  30. Let’s not say anything negative otherwise “the true” fans think that we don’t belong on the blog.

  31. How many cumulative hours of productivity are lost due to the DJF comments section during day games?

  32. Time to sweep the other birds boys(if you got balls)

  33. Good lord, we were horrible in this series. The top 3 in the order went 4 for 34, combine that with the fact the bottom of the order is terrible and you get the mess we have. The Cleveland idiots wanted to give that one away, but alas, we were too nice to take it from them. With the projected move of Lawrie to 2B, I have to wonder if a trade (Chase Headley?) is in the works. Too much has been invested in this team to just blow everything up and start over, but one thing is obvious after having watched several games in the last week or so, the club as it stands right now, is not as good as we thought or hoped. Injuries have something to do with it (Lawrie and Reyes have never played together), but there’s something there, I just can’t quite put my finger on it, that seems to be lacking. I have to give this more thought. I welcome your comments, good or bad.

    • For one thing, the starting pitching has been inconsistent, which is never good. Also, the offense is overrated. They have 3 or 4 supposedly very good hitters (Jbats, EE, reyes) a couple good but inconsistent hitters (lind, rasmus) and 4 shitbags in the lineup every day. One thing that aggravates me about this lineup is they dont battle pitchers and just give away tons of outs by being over aggressive. I was watching the red sox and I hate to say it, but their offense is fucking incredible. They make you earn every fucking out. And its not like their hitters are known for patience other than pedroia and ortiz. I dont know if its the hitting coach or what but jays need to adapt that offensive approach or else they wont go anywhere in this division. Right now, they are a long way off. That could involve several changes to position players.

  34. Ya don’t say anything bad about the Jays you bandwagoners! JPA and Lawrie rrr soo hawwt you’re just jealous.

    FAN FOREVER SINCE 2011!!!!

    #lovethisteam

  35. Someone has to fall on the axe

  36. AA: So Phil, I have an offer for you from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Phil Bickford: Which state is Toronto in?

AA: Well Toronto’s not exactly in a state, it’s in Canada.

    Phil Bickford: Fuck off!
