The Jays look to avoid being swept at the hands of the Angels, uh… I think. They lost the last two, right?

Oh, who the hell cares anymore?

Second straight start for Josh Thole behind the plate tonight. Rotowire, via theScore, seems to think it could be a sign that the Jays are ready to look elsewhere for a catcher, but… yeah, I don’t know about all that.

Edwin Encarnacion is out again today, though Gregor Chisholm tweets that he hit off a tee today and will test his sore wrist out in batting practice tomorrow.

Scott MacArthur adds that if Edwin’s wrist doesn’t respond positively, he’s not going to force himself into the lineup.

Barry Davis tweets that Colby Rasmus was hitting bombs in BP today and says he’s feeling good. He could return on the weekend, he figures.

  1. Did Buck just say that Trumbo’s been wearing the jays out all season long? Pretty sure he said he was pretty bad against the Jays before his 5-for-5.

    • .375/.423 w/ 4 HRs and 10 RBIs in 9 games against the Jays this yr

AFAIK he’s always been good against the Jays, but particularly he just crushes at the Dome

      • And since he totally fucking raked the last two games, that means he kinda sucked the whole rest of the season.

    • season…series…
      see Buck Blunders
It’s what makes him so precious.

      • So much makes Buck so precious. We don’t know how lucky we are.

Although I wish Tabby would avoid any/all references to “strapping one on” – he’s been particularly fond of this phrase in recent times.

  2. That lineup. Wow…just wow. Edwin come baaaaaaaaaaaack!

  3. great piece I read today on Ryan Goins, in-depth look at the 26 year old. you guys think he sticks?

    • He’d be a great guy to come off the bench, but id like to think there are slightly better options out there. Although, given his solid defence, It wouldn’t be the worst to have him play everyday (despite the bat).

  4. Dickey?

  5. I’m way more concerned about Richards’s knees and ankles after seeing him pitch in slow motion. Holy fuck.

He also seems to swing the ball well behind his back, showing it to the hitter. I recall Buck and Tabby hating that in Ubaldo’s delivery, saying it tips the hitter off to what he’s throwing. What gives here?

  6. Oy vey already

  7. Reyes is a jay!

  8. Can baseball IQ be taught to Sierra?

  9. When I look at Happ, I see a pitcher who gives up a lot of flyballs, doesn’t miss a whole lot of bats, and walks quite a few. Just doesn’t play in the bandboxes of the AL East. I don’t think there’s anything salvageable here for the Jays.

  10. would that bunt attempt not be classified under the infield fly rule ,therefore not allowing lawrie to purposely let it drop?

    • Nope, bunts exempt from IF fly rule.

Point being (AFAIK) that you should be able to lay down a bunt quite easily, and shouldn’t get bailed out when you mess up on #fundamentals.

  11. Hmm

  12. what an inning … a closer who throws strikes “hit it if you can” and our guys fouling off many many pitches …

  13. That KLaw Goins comment is totally on point. Goins as every day 2B seems like some weird Stockholm Syndrome-y reflex to watching the team get pounded all season.

Fans of shitty teams can talk themselves into anything… it’s not anybody’s fault, but shit. He’d be a fine back 2B/SS next year, but this is not the man we want as everyday 2B.

  14. Sweeped. Swept. Swupt.

  15. drat

  16. Yan Gomes is 3rd in bWAR and fWAR among AL catchers. Out of the 38 AL catchers with at least 50 PAs, Blanco, Arencibia and Thole are 32nd, 34th, and 38th in fWAR.

  17. it would be nice if Happ could consistently pitch 5+ IP. or…ever even.

that is kinda important for someone who wants to be a starter. I don’t think he is good enough to be a #5 starter in the Skydome in the AL East….

    • couldn’t agree more. I kinda think he has pitched himself out of a job. Sorta like RR last year now. I suspect that next time he is due to start that they will let RR start or even Drabek start. Christ, though, what fukin lousy choices.
Failing all of this it would not surprise me a bit to see Happ included as fodder in a trade or sent to Buffalo next year as he has an option left. If he is part of our 5 man SP staff come April, I don’t think it’ll be a great year

  18. we just need to keep playing a bit worse and we can still get a top 10 draft pick!! we need to worsen our position by 1-2 more games…..

If any of you have a BP subscription read this report on Syndergaard and weep. I feel old beyond my years.
