Yordano Ventura is a hell of a thing, and the much-hyped Royals prospect is living up to all the good words said about him, but a funny thing happened on the way to his matchup tonight. A funny thing like this:

Player A: 9.72 K/9, 3.72 BB/9, 3.29 xFIP, 2.48 tERA, 3.23 SIERA, .277 BABIP, 4.5% HR/FB
Player B: 11.42 K/9, 3.12 BB/9, 3.12 xFIP, 3.17 tERA, 2.93 SIERA, .364 BABIP, 10.7% HR/FB

Obviously Player A is Ventura, and Player B is tonight’s Jays starter, Drew Hutchison. And while… OK, it’s a little early to be quoting some of these types of numbers — and it’s not like it should change the long-term outlook on these guys — um… how about that!

And how about a damn win! (How about just a Raptors win, at least?)

No Brett Lawrie in the lineup tonight, and Barry Davis tweets that it’s because he’s got a sore back. Greeeeeeeeaat.

Lawrie’s unavailability means that the Jays have Juan Francisco at third. Greeeeeeeeeaat.

Moises Sierra, then, gets into the game at DH. Greeeeeeeeeeaaat.

And the bench tonight, that means, consists of Josh Thole and Jonathan Diaz. Greeeee– you get the idea. Time to fucking fix it, Alex. Not cute anymore.

According to a tweet from Brendan Kennedy, Casey Janssen threw a bullpen session today. He plans to throw another on Friday, and then head out on a rehab assignment. Scott MacArthur adds that it seems as though real, tangible progress is being made with Janssen.

Another tweet from Barry Davis tells us that John Gibbons says he’s toying with the idea of going with Juan Francisco at third and Brett Lawrie at second in some of the upcoming games in National League parks. Greeeee

  1. Can’t believe Reyes just watched that cock shot.
Shoulda tattooed that fucker to the moon.

  2. How long until Gibby just cracks a beer and says FUCK IT. Just doesn’t matter right AA ?
No bench ?? WTF how do you justify this in a BIG MARKET.

  3. Fuck it I’m watching hockey.

  4. The worst part of this is that I’m all angry here and realize that the Royals are a solid team and should expect to beat a team like the Jays. This is the goddamn reality of this season.

  5. This team is totally rudderless. They have no clue at the plate from the 5 spot on down. And I would argue that Reyes is just as lost as any of em.

Bloated bullpen = shitty bench = no late inning defensive specialist available, never mind a halfway decent bat off the bench.

Dump Rogers, Redmond, Jenkins, Happ, Sierra and bring up whoever to replace em. Couldn’t be worse.

    • They should keep redmond and piggy back him with dickey every 3rd day.

    • You do realize that Redmond:
      a) Has pitched the most innings of any Blue Jay reliever this season;
      b) Has the lowest ERA of any Blue Jay reliever this season.

      • I’m cool with dickey pitching 5-6 innings every 3rd day. And redmond pitching 2-3 innings after him. Make every team deal with the knuckle and adjust their swings.

      • Yeah but I don’t have any confidence in him when that bullpen door opens and neither do you.

  6. AA needs to give up his man crush. Sierra may have a big bat but AA is the only one benefitting!

  7. So, a 1, 2, 3 ninth?

  8. Sucks that Reyes watched the pitch, but that first strike call was utter horse shit. That fucked him so bad. Good pitch on the curve ball away. to get to 0-2.

  9. Can’t wait til they announce cabrera on dl with broken fibia and siera starting fir the foreseeable future.

  10. EvankaaaaAAAAAaaaa

  11. They haven’t won since Goins was sent down

  12. Okay so lets pretend how the defensive alignment would look in the bottom of the inning now that Thole is pinch hitting for Diaz, if they actually tied it up or took the lead

  13. So why didn’t Thole hit for Sierra?

  14. If we were to tie the game now, who would play LF?

  15. Still in the boat

  16. a dh hitting .67 how can we lose?cletus and sierra look lost!

  17. It’s early.

  18. Well it’s good in a way. Start the fire sale early to save poor Rogers some money

  19. Not of fan of basketball, but The Raptors is quite possibly the greatest name for a professional sports team in history. Love it.

  20. Lawrie would’ve made that play.

  21. I blame stoeten. AA is doing nothing so he can have stoeten cursing mother fucker over and over and over and over as he drinks and drinks and drinks his ten dollars overpriced rogers possible beer. Goodnight hitches. Fuck you later.

  22. It is early but every single team in the East has given up more runs than they have scored. Without looking into it too much (lazy) I would guess that the only reason the Yanks are over .500 is from beating up on the East.

Could a division that you would really have to lose a lot to be out of this year.

  23. Another great start from Hutch. If Lawrie was at third he would’ve had 2 ER in 7 IP.

  24. The sad thing is that this is the year that if they were half decent, they’d make the playoffs.
    This one hurts, fellas.

  25. Can they fucking get rid of Sierra already. Gose can’t possibly be any worse.

    • Gose is much much better than Sierra.

If Sierra isn’t gone then the press is going to call for AA’s head.

      • That’s the thing. Gose doesn’t even need to hit AT ALL to be a significant upgrade with his defense and baserunning. Anything with the bat is a bonus.

The roster construction is just a nightmare. AA needs to get his finger out.

  26. This is the worst bench I’ve ever seen. Diaz, Sierra and Thole. A right-handed outfielder who can’t mash lefties, an infielder who is nothing special in the field and has not hit at any level, and a knuckleball catcher. It’s not even the who, it’s the fact that these three guys are *it* and when someone needs a day off like Lawrie did tonight, it leaves you with Thole and whatever Diaz is supposed to be. I guess we’re lucky though that it’s not Lefty-throwing Second Baseman, Gyroball catcher and a dog.

Happ and Jenkins have combined for 5 (memorable, granted) innings. Forget about potential or sunk costs or options — they aren’t playing. We need two bench bats every game! This is chickenshit. I know Izturis got hurt but this is a joke. (I do like that Rogers the player and Rogers the corporation both suck though. It saves time.)

  27. The ship is sinking. Play for yourself.

    -S. Hillenbrand, Professional Hitter.

  28. Meanwhile, back in Toronto . . . .

(what baseball metaphor goes here – swing and a miss? dying quail?

  29. On the bright side, they’re still only 3 1/2 games back. Now let’s win some fucking games already.

  30. Still losing ugly and getting worse. Well, the good news is the record is not as bad as last April 30 when they were 10-17 Of course, 12-15 ain’t a whole lot better but it should have been much better.
As I posted yesterday, too many guys causing too much headwind for those busting their ass and playing well casuing us to ,well, basically stink.
Hopefully they can get it going but man it is starting to look like 2013 again with poor performers, injuries, guys playing out of position and so on.
Tonite, for example, while with 20-20 hindisght, I couldn’t understand why Gibbons wouldn’t have had EE at 3rd and Phat Juan at first. EE has proven he can field it there, it is his throwing that gives him fits-he w/h have fielded the fuckin thing instead of the phat Juan wave FFS.
I have relented on my mini strike against going to the dome until they play contending ball, because, well..and a bunch of us are going to the game against philly on May7. Will be in section 114 if anyone wants to get me a cold one-yeahhh baby. Goin again on 6/11 against Minny-behind the plate for that one.
I ‘m hoping to see them win FFS and not become a Stoeten
    Forward Soviet!

  31. Time for a players-only meeting? It might be a tad early to panic, and we did just face two of the hottest pitchers in the AL the last couple of days, and actually managed to knock them up a bit more than anyone else.

  32. You already have players coming out like reyes that are stating their displeasure with the team. Not liking where this season is heading guys. Why did i buy that 20 ticket package? Anyways, lets go raptors!!

  33. your thoughts on things going into this game were greee

  34. Kind of weird how we have been getting beat by teams who get fewer hits than us while hitting fewer home runs as well.

seems like alot of bad luck. just go back and look at the box scores and see how efficient the opponnets have been in runs relative to hits. its freaking insanse. . of course some of this is from walks..but some of it is from bunching hits.

    • If by luck you mean giving up the most walks in the league then once there are runners on needing to throw it right down the middle to avoid walking in runners then yes good point.

  35. Hola!!! Guys..guys…I know you didnt have much faith in me coming into the season..but I doubt even my biggest critic would think i could possibly suck THIS bad!!.

    SLAP ASS!!

  36. AA is officially a joke of a GM. jo jo reyes, omar visquel, sierra. the guy consistently tries to hide shitty players knowing full well they have no place on a ML team.

    • Every major league roster has fringe players. If bench players were awesome, they wouldn’t be bench players, they’d be starters.

      • wrong, these are not bench players, these are AAA players

        • What are your thoughts on the Red Sox, Indians, Rangers and Athletics GM positions, given the existence of Jonathan Herrera, Grady Sizemore, Nick Swisher, Prince Fielder, Nick Punto and Daric Barton, all of whom have been as bad as or worse than Sierra?

  37. The roster construction of this team is really acting to their detriment these days. Yesterday we saw Todd Redmond warming in the 7th inning of a tie ballgame. I’m pretty sure that is one of the signs of an impending loss. There are too many arms down there and not enough quality. Other than Santos and Delabar there is no RHP of any quality in the pen. Part of that is Janssen, but most of it is Wagner not being around in favour of Redmond, Rogers and Jenkins. When those guys start seeing time in high leverage situations, you know something needs to change.

    • Yup it’s time for AA to come out of hiding and fix the roster

    • Santos has not been good. At this point Id rather see Redmond in the high leverage situation than Santos

      • That’s crazy talk. Redmond is a scrub. Santos is a borderline elite late inning reliever who’s being plagued by BABIP and command issues

        • That translates to Santos has not pitched well because he has little control and gets hit hard when he does throw strikes which are often right down the middle. Sure he has potential but the fact is he is not pitching well at all. So far he has been a scrub and Redmond has been pretty good.

          • since when has Santos ever got hit hard? i saw a GB double and a GB single last time he pitched. sometimes those are hits, but mostly they’re outs.

  38. This team fucking sucks.

  39. Here’s something odd.

Looking at last season and this one together, the Jays have a better record without Reyes.

Don’t let him be the curse.

  40. ROSTER CONSTRUCTION!!! God damn it.

  41. Sierra DFA’d. Thank God. He couldn’t even hit the Arencibia line.

  42. I think Darin Mastroianni may be the smarter move here, no?

  43. I guess Tolleson got the call because he can play 3B and seems to have a vague idea about how to take a walk?

  44. Diaz got himself sent down by that garbage bunt attempt last night. Gose will add speed which they need badly for even punch hitting. As much as I was pissed at Reyes for his looking three pitch k, we saw earlier this week when he’s on the lineup is scary 1-4 at least
