The skies over downtown Detroit are clearing as we speak, and should improve markedly in the hour or so following what the image above forecasts, so I don’t doubt that we’ll see some baseball tonight, but there’s a chance it could be a while before we go. Gregor Chisholm tweets at 6:25, though, that “the tarp is coming off at Comerica Park and the sun is starting to shine through the clouds. Should be able to start this game on time.” I can live with that. Especially since, while it’s not April, and the game-time temperature will be a hell of a lot closer to 20 degrees than it will zero. But… uh… if Mother Nature does turn shitty, how do we feel about the Jays whipping the Dick out — along with his magic knucklepitch — in rainy conditions?

Not good, I suspect. And hopefully we don’t have to find out.

On the other hand, the Jays already have a leg up in this three-game set, following last night’s ninth inning awesomeness and unawesomeness and awesomeness again. So… I can live with that. And they face Rick Porcello tonight, who… while he’s been pretty excellent so far this year (3.68 ERA, 3.93 FIP, 3.68 xFIP), might be the kind of starter the Jays can get to. He doesn’t get a tonne of strikeouts (16.3%), and while an improved defence behind him surely is helping keep his BABIP lower than it has been in any of the previous four seasons, at .290 it’s pretty low, while he sports quite a bit higher-that-usual ground ball rate, and is giving up more line drives than ever before in his career, and fly balls at a rate higher than he has in three years. Inducing flies at Comerica doesn’t sound like the worst thing a pitcher could do (fingers crossed, R.A.), but the Jays certainly have demonstrated the ability to put them where the defenders can’t reach, and it doesn’t hurt that, along with the A’s, they lead the majors in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers, too.

Yep. Oh, yep. I can live with that.

Go Jays!

Brendan Kennedy tweets a tidbit via Buster Olney, which is the fact that the eight runs scored in the ninth inning by the Jays and Tigers were the most combined runs scored ever in a game with eight scoreless innings. Toldja it was a weird’n!

The Tigers D’d Danny Worth FA today, calling up some infield help in Eugenio Suarez. Sports Illustrated has it, apparently.

Yours truly tweets, “RA has reverse splits this year, but hadn’t for the past 3. Tigers hardly have any LHB, but Don Kelly (L) out for Castellanos (R). Hmm.”

  3. E3

  4. Well, this inning has been some weird shit.

  5. Look at that Bautista leadership.

  6. Omar Vizquel’s the 1st base coach?

  7. Poor Goggles, victim of bad luck.

The defense this inning is the opposite of a Buehrle start.

  8. C’mon Dusty

  9. huge out

  10. DUSTY!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Ah a familiar Rajai K against a righty.

  12. Oh yeah.

  13. Keep Dustin’s arm warm…No Rogers and No DelaBar please

  14. I like Rajai better on the other team.

  16. scoreboard update: nobody else in ALE is winning at this time

  17. texas ties it up with o’s, a’s lead late, and clev with the early lead

  18. Thag make big swing.

  19. OAK now up on the Yankees 5-4…Texas has tied things up with BALT 5-5…Tampa continues to suck…CLEV up 1-0 early (rain delay) vs BOS…

never too early to scoreboard watch

  20. Detroit sure seems to have a lot of these 6+ ERA relievers.

  21. Dr. KRATZ!

  22. Was it just a few years ago.
I never thought McGowan would be healthy enough to pitch.
Cecil’s velocity had dropped where everybody was sayin DFA
Snider was hailed as the next superstar.
    EE was waived.
Who was J Buck and why was he blocking playing time for JPA?
Romero was an allstar opening day pitcher.

Amazing game never fails to amaze.

  23. I could have sworn Siddall just said “Knievel”. Is his first name Evil?

  24. How can you be in a 4 for 15 run and have a comfortable lead?

  25. Cecil appeared tonight for the first time since May 27.

  26. I’d say give the ninth inning to Jenkins, and have Janssen ready in case he doesn’t make it.

  27. Joey Bats thinking yard.

  28. we would love a homer here Jose

  29. In honour of winning the series against Detroit.

A tune from Detroit’s finest, Stevie Wonder

  30. Jose Jose Jose Jose, Jose Jose!

  31. Casey gets to rest tonight!

  32. Bow Tee Stah

  33. Joey Bats!

  37. Ump with the mercy strike.

  38. I want to punch Ken

  39. Come on Jenkins, don’t pull a Delabar here!

  40. Jesus the Chadster’s ERA is freaking 9.00.

  41. Did Chad lose weight??

  42. Sweep tomorrow?

  43. Woo!

    Hope Edwin’s okay.

  45. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. Jenkins with the Casey impression. NICE!!!

  47. Thanks Louper

  48. Good game.

  49. No fuss no muss for Jenkins

  50. Chad getting lessons from King Henrik

  51. Is Edwin okay? Gibby took him out and he must feel pretty safe with this lead cause now the DH is gone

  52. A’s up 7-4 on the Yankees

  53. Casey Jenkins

  54. Well rays have bases loaded bottom of the 9th none out. If they cant score a few here stick a fork in them.

  55. Remember when we were all in the boat? Paddling around unhappily. Felt like this agony would never end. Well I’ve no idea how long this stuff will last. But this has to be the strongest team we’ve fielded since ’93. And Gbby is managing like a champ.

  56. RIP Don Zimmer.

  57. Baltimore is losing to Tx.

  58. Nice win tonight.
    Lets hope EE is ok.

  59. Stanks lose!

    (So did the Rays)

    • The Rays are out of it now. The hole is just too deep unless some freakish streak happens.

  60. A’s win 7-4.

  61. Has the torch been passed? Is Miami now the best baseball team in Florida?

  62. Gregor says Edwin was removed his back acted up. Day to day.

  63. Damn. What an incredible run for the Jays. 18-4 in their last 22, including series wins against ALL five AL playoff teams from last year (CLE, BOS, OAK, TB, DET with the other two series being against TEX and KC).

  64. Jays have played 5 more games than the Tigers. I guess that’s one good thing about having a dome… I hate rainouts

  65. Jays are now playing .600 ball for the season!

    F o r t h e s e a s o n

  66. And the answer is

    Gregor Chisholm ‏@gregorMLB ·now
Gibbons said Encarnacion was removed from the game because his back tightened up. He’s day to day for now

    • Sucks, might need him against Verlander tomorrow. And it’s a day game

    • Meh, Eddie is due for some time off. Still have Lind and Francisco.

Both EE and Jose tend to play even when they dhould probably rest. Jose has started to realize that off days help.

Reyes and Lawrie need a day off too.

  67. .600 ball, 6 games ahead of the Yankees, 8 ahead of the hated Red Sox. life is good

  68. Loup was the hero tonight. Without him getting Dickey out of the 6th who knows what the result would be.

  69. Orioles win 6-5

  70. The Blue Jays keep rolling and winning seems to come almost naturally. Loup is Dickey’s spiritual animal and Bautista is the Man. Hope Edwin is okay and use this absence to get fully charged for another one of those 15 home run months. Let’s Go Blue Jays!

  71. After it was 6-2, I whispered to a co-worker, “Oh my god, this might be the year.”

He immediately shushed me. “Don’t ruin this.”

  72. Missed the end, had a game.
Teammate came over to have a beer and watch the Dodgers with me.
I told him to take a seat on the chesterfield and I’d get him a beer.
He said “what the fucks a chesterfield?”
Does no one use this term?
My dad always called a couch a chesterfield.
Weird this only comes up at this stage in my life.

Anyway I gotta go tell him to fuck himself and drink some beer.

    Jaysssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Win.

    • Born and brought up in Toronto….Always called it a chesterfield.

But later found that couch and divan and sofa were also acceptable.

How many words do the inuit have for “snow”?

  73. Born and raised in London (Ont) and we always called it a chesterfield growing up.

What did you settle on for walk-up music, Smash?

  74. I’m one of two people I know who call it a chesterfield.
