Well, if the accumulation of a massive amount of season-saving wins is going to start somewhere, where better than at home against the Red Sox, and against Clay Buchholz in what’s been an abysmal year for him (even though his peripherals don’t look too different than they ever are at all)?

Not that we’re at the stage where the Jays can pick and choose who they get hot against, mind you. Things are bleak. The winning has to start now. It might not even matter if it does. Etc. etc. etc.

Nice day, though, eh? And baseball!

Megan Robinson tweets that John Gibbons says Casey Janssen and Dustin McGowan are getting the night off tonight, with Brett Cecil and Aaron Loup expected to be used in the 8th and 9th innings.

Mike Wilner adds that Gibbers was sure to “relay confidence” in Janssen as he noted that he was being given the night off.

Jose Bautista still doesn’t think he should have been ejected.

Talk about the mushy middle: the Jays went into this game 5.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot and 5.5 games out of landing a protected draft pick next June. With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy for stealing his shtick, you might be a garbage clown if… you think the Jays should tank for the protected pick instead of doing everything they possibly can to get back in the race.

Lately Facebook changed its algorithm with respect to sharing, it’s really become a much more powerful social media tool, and so it’s probably in your best interest to just go right ahead and like DJF on Facebook. That way you can get everything that’s posted here injected straight into your feed-veins.

And while we’re at it, you might as well follow me on Twitter, follow @DrunkJaysFans, and follow the dusty ol’ DJF Instagram too!

Next game(s): Tomorrow, 7:07 PM ET vs. Boston

  1. 32 games left
Jays need to go at least 20-12 to have a shot

  2. Fuck John Farrell

  3. Getting into ‘must sweep’ territory here.

  4. Did Rogers actually just make a joke about “drugging someone’s drink” in a commercial?

  5. 6 game win streak followed by an 18-8 September, let’s do it!

  6. Stick a fork in em

  7. Jays have had a lot of success against Boston so I could see a positive outcome from this series. Smart money has the Jays missing the playoffs. The longer we can go without the Jays turning into spoilers the better, though, right?

  8. It’s HAPPening tonight!

  9. Both Melk and Reyes well below the MLB average for pitches taken per plate appearance (in their respective careers). Seems to factor into a lot of those quick innings for the opposing pitchers, especially when the middle of order has been gutted by injury (beyond Bau who takes a ton of pitches and walks a lot)

  10. Happ looks good tonight. He is much maligned but I think AA would be wise to pick up his option for next year.

    • +1

both him and Redmond have been quiet successes this year IMO and bring good value for what they are being paid

    • That’s a no brainer. I’m thinking Sanchez should be given consideration as closer. Starting 5: Buerhle, Dickey, Hutch, Stro, and Happ.

      • Sanchez isn’t going to close.

      • thats a possibility . . . Sanchez might be too good to be a closer but he definitely should be pitching with the team in some capacity next year

        Delabar? Rasmussen? Drabek?

        gone are

        • There’s free agent relievers also.

          • yea those would be in the ? mark area

only locks are Loup, Cecil, Redmond so there’s definitely room to add relievers although they have some interesting arms in the minors who could serve just as well possibly

McGowan is FA i think, but pretty sure he’ll be back

Delabar who knows if he makes his way to back to big leagues and sticks, I hope so, but he was next level awful this yr, could be toiling in minors for a bit

      • I think Jannsen will wind up in Detroit next year.

It’d be perfect for him, he’d be on a quasi-contender and would be viewed as mana from the heavens by their fans. Wow is that bullpen complete trash right now. Like anything is an upgrade, anything at all.

But yeah, I don’t see how he comes back here if those reports are remotely true. He would not be the first to be broken by 8 yrs of frustration. I can’t even blame him, really.

        • Janssen would be perfect in the human dumpster that is the Tigers bullpen.

        • Blair says he wants to go to California. But money talks.

        • @jm

I hope he stays but I concede that he is frustrated with the Jays .

It looks to me that AA was handcuffed at adding any players that were not on waivers beginning January 2014.

I met Casey in 2011 @ the Jays camp out & he was very friendly & signed a baseball for my daughter.

  11. Qualls claimed on waivers, wonder if it’s the Jays

  12. I cannot lie: I kinda love Brock Holt.

  13. great arm

  14. The Melk-man throweth!

  15. Melky Melk and the Funky Bunch!

  16. SSS here but does it seem like Valencia has a hard time making tags at third? Seems like he’s made a couple that were way closer than needed to be, almost like he’s afraid to tag or just doesn’t set himself down properly to tag?

    • I think most 3Bs have those minor problems. Catching a throw from the OF would be easier for a LH thrower (because you’d be catching it into the runner with your forehand) but LH throwers can’t make the throw across the diamond on grounders.

  17. Shit, could the Red Sox really be the antidote we’ve been waiting for? I was forgetting what it was like to do that stuff to the opposition.

Jays have 4 home games against the M’s in late Sept. It’s not a stretch that they’d be in a position to sweep that series and get back to scratch. Not what I would have asked for a month ago, but just a reminder that we’re not quite dead yet.

  18. Pitch Selection: Clay Buchholz

    Fastball: 45%
    Cutter: 25%
    Curveball: 20%
    Changeup: 10%
    Greaseball: 100%

  19. I don’t even want to think about not beating Buchholz tonight. That’s supposed to be as automatic as they come.

    • Me, I hate thinking about all those other teams currently casting grasping and covetous glances at our Melky.

      • Looking’s free, touching’s gonna cost ya.

        • yankees are getting ready to write the cheque

          • I’m wondering about them and their luxury cap. They don’t want to go over and they’ve already got Ellsbury Gardener and Beltran. Suzuki looks to be retiring this year so maybe they’ll be in on someone. But don’t forget that they’re going to have to pay A-Rod next year too.

            • Do you think they’d care if they go over, to sign Melky?

              • Of course the quick answer is no. But I’ve read in MLBTR a few times now that they are concerned about it. Moreover they’ve been over the threshold (189 MM) for so many years now that the tax on the overage is an automatic 50%. Their 2014 opening day payroll was 197 MM. If I was feeling energetic, I’d check and see who’s coming off the payroll and who’s getting raises etc, but meh. I’m betting if they sign Melky his contract will cost less than the 50% penalty

  20. Castro had a good debut with Dunedin tonight.

  21. It would be nice if the Royals could help us out a bit here, and beat the damn yankees.
I hate seeing them ahead of us in the standings. And now the Rays are knocking at the door.
    How did that even happen?

  22. Wilner went nuts for Betts’ HR even though he is on the other team. He needs to stay the fuck out of the booth.

  23. Will Middlebrooks should hit for a higher average. Because he just looks like a hitter.

    Source: Pat Tabler

  24. What the fuck is up with the strike zone? It’s some bizzaro world stuff happening right now.

  25. this ump is entertaining

  26. well fuck . . .

  27. Fucking rat

  28. Fucking Baldy Smurf

  29. If Pedroia takes you to the wall the first time around, it’s probably best to not give him another shot at hitting it in the same spot?

  30. How many games in the last who knows when have the Jays struggled to get more than 2 hits by the 5th inning? Seems like a lot.

    • I wonder if Seitzer is on the hot seat at the end of the year.

      • I hope not. Can’t stand the thought of another winter/spring hearing about how hard the new hitting coach works and how to flies to the players’ home cities and couch surfs for the weekend.

      • I cant imagine why

        2012 Jays – 11th in average, 13th in OBP, 9th in walks, 1200 strikeouts
        2013 Jays – 10th in average, 8th in OBP, 9th in walks, 1100 strikeouts
2014 Jays – 3rd in average, 2nd in OBP, 6th in walks, on pace for 1050 strikeouts

and their power has been pretty much top 5 last couple years, i’d say it’s even more balanced this year with doubles and HRs

    • Yeah but we’re facing Buchholz so it’s understandable.

Also, I just woke up from a coma. It’s still 2013 right?

      • You might be suffering from the bends.
Next time try resurfacing at a more leisurely pace.

  31. I’m starting to think Bautista was onto something. We need to have a debacle game. Yell at the umps, get in a couple of donnybrooks, get it all out of your system.
Then go and win the whole fucking thing.

  32. Please guy, could the editing crew scrounge up some more clips of Pedroia? Especially that 2 run HR he just hit against us?

And maybe have Buck and Tabs jerk him off verbally for a minute?

    Thanks un advance!

  33. “At the all-star break, Janssen owned a 1.23 ERA in 23 outings. He had allowed 18 hits in 22 innings. Since then, he has worked in 16 games, allowing 10 runs and 18 hits in 13⅔ innings. Over that span, his ERA is 6.58.”

  34. Last year’s first rounder Phil Bickford is leaving Fullerton; he’s apparently considered Independent Ball with the goal of entering the 2015 draft

  35. Buchholz outgreased Colby with that one.

  36. We need the Home Hardware crew to manufacture some fucking runs.

  37. This is a mega bummer

  38. Good news is interview for a dece promotion on thursday so yayyyyy

  39. Applause for Happ

  40. Ump just climaxed

  41. Jays look like they have thrown in the towel for this year.We can act as spoilers again this september!Hooray!

  42. O’s score all their runs on HRs, going to be rough when they get swept in the first round cuz they cant manufacture runs any other way

  43. Betts was safe

    • Don’t need replay for that call, ump blew it. I was barely watching and I could tell he was safe. But I wish they would uphold the call for the Jays sake. Lol

  44. Did Farrell just give the bird to the fans when he ran out or was he just scratching his head?

  45. Why is that surprising? Most reviews are on 50/50 type plays. So the success rte is roughly 50%.

    • I’ve noticed way more blown calls from umps not paying attention anymore. I’m not saying that I’d get everything right, but geez some of the calls are too easy and the ump just gets it wrong because they have to look decisive, right or wrong. I think they just call something knowing that there is replay to make the call. Was originally a fan of replay and still think it should be involved in the game, but the umps really have to step it up.

  46. Soooo Long. Sooo big…. Sooo nimble!

    • Nimble is a new one. Tabby must have been consulting the thesaurus while he was on hiatus.

  47. I think pedroia swallowed his dip on that lol

    • Ah, so thats what DJF’ers have been meaning this whole time:

Suck it – John Farrell to Pedroia

  48. Evanka’s wardrobe consists of only tight sleeveless tops

  49. I hate the Red Sox, I hate them so so much.

  50. Lind walk off slam

  51. Good ol John Farrell. Always count on him to get bogged down in “The Book”

The Book says you bring in your closer in this situation. Never mind that Lind can be either one of the best hitters in baseball or one of the worst, depending on which hand the pitcher throws with.

Thanks for bringing in the righty John

  52. Yessssss!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. Weoooooo

  54. nice

  55. Eddie!!!

  56. Oh my!

  57. Fuck I thought that was gone

  58. Lmao greaseball can’t buy a win

  59. I thought that was gone.

  60. Dinner is served?

  61. This game would be over if not for Jose’s hard slide. Fuck anyone who says he doesnt wanna win

  62. That was a pretty leadershippy break up of the dp by Bautista

  63. Dinner for the winner.

  64. Boston really should have sold high on Uehara.

  65. TSN Turning point for 2014? lol

  66. Sanchez to close it out? What a great idea.

  67. I like Sidall giving actual baseball input.

  68. Fuck off American Dad.

  69. Fucking hell… Cespedes with 19 RBI’s since joining the Sox

  70. Bad choice going with the curve to cespedes

A cheezy infield hit and two stolen bases

  71. Well, this is it.

  72. Fuck Reyes, swing at something in this time zone please?

  73. Fuck goddamn

  74. I will say this. They sure do find some interesting ways to lose…

  75. Maybe this team’s comfort zone is .500.

Maybe that’s really the deal, after awhile they feel awkward playing any other way.

  76. Need to win out on the homestand

  77. Please. Enough.
