The Canadian women’s artistic gymnastics team has earned a birth in the finals marking the first time ever, yes, ever, that a Canadian team has reached the final. The woman, who are actually teenagers, finished sixth in qualifying, good enough for a birth in the 8-team finals.

The event is made up of the uneven bars, balance beam, vault and floor routines. While the team struggled early on in the first two events they were able to make up the ground they lost in the latter half of the qualifying and finished in their 6th spot.

The 1984 Canadian gymnastic team also qualified for the finals yet this was the first time that Canada will compete for the gold in a non-boycott Olympics.

It was pretty cool to see these girls after they qualified because, as young girls, their excitement was about as genuine as you see in sports. Even bad human interest questions from a CTV interviewer couldn’t erase the smiles from their faces. Obviously, I’ll be rooting for them on Tuesday in the finals, if only to see what kind of reaction we can get out of them with a medal win. A very cool story from an all-around fun day at the Olympics.
