Ever wanted to feel really tired, really quickly? Watch the 1500m freestyle in swimming. Putting aside the fact that I don’t know how anyone completes this event without drowning, this one was actually pretty exciting and ended in a good result for Canada.
Ryan Cochrane finished second in the grueling race behind China’s Sun Yang who absolutely obliterated the world record and beat Cochrane by more than 8 seconds. Yang almost didn’t get his chance to race, however, as he looked to have false started. However, it was deemed to be crowd noise that caused him to leave early and he was allowed to race.
Cochrane held second place for most of the race but was almost overtaken by Tunisian Oussama Mellouli but Cochrane was able to hold him off for the silver medal. Surprisingly, Cochrane was actually able to give an interview after the race and was somehow not doubled over recovering his breath like a normal human being would be after swimming 1500m. Perhaps he’s a mutant?
However, I was most surprised to discover that Tunisia is quite a force in the pool. After all, it is literally Tatooine.
