We talked a little bit earlier today about the 2010 Cincinnati Reds, and it appears that there’s now even more reason to cheer for NL Central Division leaders.

The Reds could be in the odd position of clinching the division title without even playing if the St. Louis Cardinals lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight, an off day for Cincinnati.

Second baseman Brandon Phillips, who claims to have never had alcohol touch his lips, promises to partake in some communal champagne celebrations, or as the great Ronnie Dobbs would put it, a champagne jam, once the Reds clinch the title.

After both the Reds and Cards won yesterday, Phillips said, “I was trying to get my drink on for the first time. It would have been a great headache. It would have been a beautiful thing, but, obviously, I’ve got to wait for that.”

It may be hard for some to imagine a 29 year old man never getting near the booze, but not for me.  Judging by the photograph, Phillips has a natural six beer glow, and, unlike most males from my hometown, he doesn’t require alcohol to get chirpy.

The sober one had this to say about the Cardinals prior to a three game series with their Central Division rivals back in August:

We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear – I hate the Cardinals.

Phillips’ comments contributed to an on field bruhaha resulting in more than one suspension and a little bit of dust being kicked up.  Here’s hoping that his first drink doesn’t go quite as roughly.
