Over the last three years, no player in baseball has a worse OPS than Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim catcher Jeff Mathis. He can’t hit, doesn’t walk, has little speed and most defensive metrics rank him poorly, and yet, he’ll most likely receive a small raise from the $1.3 million he made last year after the Angels tendered him a contract.
If Los Angeles GM Tony Reagins has any regrets, they’ve likely been buried so deeply into his subconscious that the above photo is all the man sees while he sleeps. The real Mathis is his totem.
