The Long Road To The Majors

Cork Gaines of Business Insider provides us with a graph that exhibits the distance between Major League Baseball teams’ locations and that of their Triple A affiliate.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to any Blue Jays fan that the kilometers, then miles, between Toronto and Las Vegas represent the biggest gap in distance for a big club and farm team, but the difference between them and the next farthest away is staggering.

The average distance from a Triple-A team and their parent franchise is approximately 434 miles. The Blue Jays top minor club, the Las Vegas 51s, are 2,261 miles from Toronto. The next biggest distance between clubs is the Minnesota Twins, whose AAA partner in Rochester, New York is 1,012 miles away (by car).

The Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves have the smallest distance between club and affiliate, only having to travel 36 miles to reach their in-state farm team.

Assuming you have an aversion to flying or saving money on the notoriously cheap flights that are always going to Vegas, here, via Google Maps, are the directions from Rogers Centre in Toronto to  Cashman Field in Las Vegas.

  1. You know what would be nice? If the Jays could find a way to put their AAA team in Montreal. That would be awesome.

  2. or Ottawa… stadium is already here. :)

  3. Oh yeah, that’s right, we never had a real baseball stadium in this city!

    Fuck.

  4. Well, you never had a FULL baseball stadium in that city Dave…

  5. Isn’t nice planes were invented?

  6. That is wrong Ray. The Expos had very good attendance up until around their last 10 years.

  7. What Matt said. The Expos even outdrew the Yankees for a good stretch in the eighties.

  8. In a perfect world:

    AAA – Ottawa or Montreal

    AA – London

    A – Lansing (existing)
