In the top of the seventh inning at Wrigley Field last night, the Milwaukee Brewers had runners on first and third with two out and Cory Hart at the plate. As Chicago Cubs reliever Chris Carpenter began to throw his seventh pitch of the at bat, Ryan Braun at third base and Prince Fielder at first base took off as part of a hit and run play. Hart made contact with Carpenter’s pitch and sent a screamer down the third base line that landed foul, but before it did, the ball flew right at Braun’s head, narrowly missing him after the runner ducked.
That blurry white line above the Brewers’ number eight in the screen capture is the hard hit baseball that nearly killed Braun. We tend to talk about fearlessness more in contact sports like hockey or football, but make no mistake, committing to a hit and run from third base while a right handed hitter is at the plate takes some serious cajones.
