Yu Darvish was scheduled to pitch earlier today, or yesterday if you’re in Japan, but because his Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters recently clinched a playoff spot, the 25 year old right hander was given the day off.

No big deal, right? I mean, a rested roster is one of the benefits a team that clinches early earns for itself.

You wouldn’t be wrong to think this. And you also likely wouldn’t be a member of the Baltimore Orioles organization. You see, according to a translated report from MLB Trade Rumors, the Orioles sent player development director John Stockstill to Japan this week specifically to watch Darvish pitch in this game.

Oh, Baltimore. You guys are just so adorable.

  2. Oh man. That’s just depressing.

  3. sometimes the universe just leans down and smacks you in the head with ‘give up on life.’ Baltimore, this is one of those times. you should willingly relegate to AAA, or at least the NL.

  4. big deal, the orioles expense a few extra days in japan for one scout on the understanding that they’re thinking of spending ~100million bucks on him. yea, i would probably want someone there on the off chance he pitched the last game. my guess is that the plan was that he would be there to see a playoff start as well, anyway.
    this is bad karma,
