Strange news arrives today via the official Twitter feed of the Toronto Blue Jays – former Jays Cy Young winner and bullpen coach during the 2011 season Pat Hentgen steps down from his role due to family considerations. Another former Jays pitcher, Pete Walker, is named his replacement as the the big club’s new bullpen coach. Walker spent the last season as the Jays double-A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats pitching coach.
Hentgen assumes a new, more figureheadish, role as Special Assistant to the Organization. Hentgen figures to kiss many babies, shake many hands and spend more time with his family in this new assignment.
Congrats are in order for Pete Walker, a man purported to be quite good at his job. Much respect due to Hentgen for stepping away to do what he believes right.
