According to a press release from Major League Baseball, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Joe Torre has resigned from his position to explore opportunities with a group that will be pursuing ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the interim, Commissioner Bud Selig will place Joe Garagiola, Kim Ng and Peter Woodfork in charge of Torre’s responsibilities while MLB searches for a permanent replacement.

As I’m sure most of his bullpen remembers, Torre managed Los Angeles for three seasons beginning in 2008. He then retired and joined MLB last year. Meanwhile, after entering bankruptcy months ago, owner Frank McCourt put the Dodgers up for sale with initial bids being due on January 23.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman informs us that the group Torre is connected with is headed by Los Angeles real estate magnate Rick Caruso.

In related news, Kenley Jansen’s arm just got incredibly nervous.
