The Tampa Bay Rays are taking a chance on outfielder/first baseman Brandon Allen, claiming the former fifth-round selection of the Chicago White Sox off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.
Allen, who was traded to Oakland at last year’s trade deadline for reliever Brad Ziegler, was recently designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Daric Barton. He appeared in only three games this season, going 0-for-7 and striking out five times.
Despite showing glimpses of power, usually against right handed pitching, Allen has been unable to hold onto a job at the big league level. It’s expected that the Rays will use him as a platoon bat off the bench.
