Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford’s streak of 49 straight saves came to an end last night against the Chicago Cubs when a David DeJesus triple scored Ian Stewart to tie the game at five in the top of the ninth. I can’t explain how Stewart was on base, except to note that there are first times for everything.
The Cubs scored twice more to take the lead, but in the bottom half of the inning Corey Hart saved Axford’s Canadian bacon with a two run home run to tie the game, and then a walk off RBI single in the thirteenth to win the game for the Brew crew.
Exciting stuff, but the note you see at the top of this post is from Axford, who left the ballpark as quickly as he could to be with his wife who went into labour with the couple’s second child shortly after the game.
Friendly note of thanks to Jordan Schelling of MLB.com, who snapped the picture to provide further evidence that John Axford is awesome.
