The Baltimore Orioles are getting one player back from injury tonight, with the return of second baseman Brian Roberts from the DL, but may be down a pitcher, after Brian Matusz was hit in the nose during a bunting drill.

Matusz his having, what, you may call, a break through season, if you compare to last year that is. In 12 starts for the O’s, he has recorded a 4.48 FIP and 9.3% HR/FB ratio. Last season, he sported a 7.66 FIP and 20.0% HR/FB ratio. Matusz posted a 2.7 fWAR in 2010, making 32 starts.

If Matusz is forced to miss his start due to the injury, Jake Arrieta or Dana Eveland would likely be the two choices to take the mound for manager Buck Showalter.

This is the second pitcher to go down this season in a batting cage, as the Pirates A.J. Burnett was struck in the face doing bunting drills in spring training. Burnett underwent surgery on his eye and missed almost six weeks of action.

  1. AJ underwent surgery on the bone around his eye (his orbital bone) not his eye. There’s a pretty big difference between bone damage and eyeball damage, especially for a professional athlete.
