In a transaction similar to that which happened between the Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez has asked for, and been given his release from the Oakland Athletics. The 40 year old designated hitter has been playing at Triple A Sacramento and has been eligible for a call up since the end of May, after serving his 50 game suspension for using banned substances.
However, Oakland has been using Johnny Gomes and Seth Smith in a platoon role at DH, to some success, and Ramirez’s obvious lack of power wasn’t forcing them to switch that up anytime soon. In 69 plate appearances, Ramirez had a 302/.348/.349 slash, with three doubles and zero homers. He was striking out in almost a quarter of his plate appearances and walking in just over 7%.
Ramirez’s representatives at Praver Shapiro Sports Management issued the following statement:
Manny believes he has demonstrated that he is ready to return to the major leagues. However, given that the Athletics could not give Manny any assurance that they plan to promote him in the immediate future he asked for his release. Manny thanks the Athletics for providing him with this opportunity.
