The Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals have hooked up on a deal involving two struggling pitchers. The Rockies have agreed to send Jeremy Guthrie to the Royals for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez, who was just designated for assignment.

Guthrie, who was acquired by the Rockies this off season for pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom, was named the opening day starter after a good spring, but has struggled all season long. Guthrie owned a 6.35 ERA, 6.34 FIP and 5.15 xFIP in 19 appearances with the club. His 21 home runs allowed was tops in the National League.

Sanchez, who Parkes wrote about on Tuesday, ranked last in xFIP, last in FIP and second last in ERA this season. He was acquired in a trade from the Giants for Melky Cabrera, yes the All-Star MVP Melky Cabrera.

This trade may go down as just a swap of one terrible pitcher for another, but at least the Rockies can justify it by saving over $1 million in salary.

  1. Good trade for KC. Guthrie is at least healthy. I think something’s up with Sanchez. Doesn’t have the same zip on his fastball. He might’ve got taken off the DL a bit too soon.
