With a little more than a week until baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline, general managers for all 30 clubs are keeping their cell phone companies happy in hopes of making a deal to help their club for now or the future. From now until the July 31st deadline, we here at Getting Blanked will have you covered each day with the latest rumours from around the league.

This week, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said the Atlanta Braves were only looking to acquire a top of the rotation type pitcher. So pitchers such as the Mariners’ Jason Vargas and Twins’ Francisco Liriano don’t fit that description, but a surprising name out of Boston just might. The Braves called the Boston Red Sox about starter Jon Lester, according to MLB.com. Lester, the Red Sox opening day starter the last two seasons, has struggled this season to say the least. He was named the Red Sox fourth starter in the rotation to begin the second half after a five win, 4.49 ERA first half. The second half has not been any better for the left-hander though, especially after today’s miserable start in which he allowed eleven earned runs on nine hits, including four long home runs in only four innings against the Blue Jays.

The Red Sox might not get another call about Lester this season, instead, they may have to go shopping to replace him in the rotation.

Here are more of today’s rumours:

The New York Yankees would be better off waiting until the off-season to acquire D’Backs outfielder Justin Upton, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The Orioles would love to acquire Brewers starter Zack Greinke, but it may be tough for Baltimore’s GM Dan Duquette, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Getting Blanked has the latest with the Padres extension to outfielder Carlos Quentin, a player many thought would be dealt for prospects.

The Chicago Cubs are optimistic starter Matt Garza can make his next start after leaving the game Saturday vs the Cardinals with cramping in his right triceps, according to Patrick Mooney on twitter.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have shifted their focus from Cubs starter Ryan Dempster to starter Matt Garza, according to ESPN.com.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers have discussed a Stephen Drew for Jhonny Peralta trade, according to Foxsportsarizona.com.

The San Francisco Giants may consider trading for Royals closer Jonathan Broxton, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.

If the Philadelphia Phillies decide to deal pitcher Cliff Lee, the Rangers would be a possibility, as they aren’t on Lee’s 21-team veto list, according to Jon Heyman.

The Yankees have inquired about Justin Upton, Shane Victorino and Twins outfielder Denard Span, who the Twins are asking a “ton” for, according to a source for Jon Heyman.
