The Boston Red Sox offence lost David Ortiz to an achilles injury just as Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the lineup, but according to WEEI.com, Ortiz will have the protective boot on his right foot removed and hopes to start swinging a bat on the weekend. Ortiz is eligible to return from the Disabled List August 1st.
Ortiz was injured on July 16th while rounding second base on an Adrian Gonzalez home run. Since the injury, the Red Sox have gone 3-5, scoring 32 runs over those eight games, which isn’t terrible. The problem for the Red Sox over that span is the 47 runs they’ve given up.
On the season, the eight-time All-Star has a .316/.414/.609 line with a 1.024 OPS and 23 home runs.
