Shortly after acquiring starting pitcher Ryan Dempster before the close of non-waiver trading today, Texas Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels announced that Neftali Feliz has a torn ulnar collateral ligament that will require Tommy John surgery, resulting in the pitcher’s absence for the remainder of this season, and some of the next.
Feliz, who through seven starts had proven to be very effective in his transition from Rangers closer to member of the rotation, has been on the Disabled List since mid-May. After the tall and lean right-hander missed his last rehab start due to soreness in his elbow, Texas set a deadline for today to see if his condition would improve. Apparently, it did not, and now Feliz will have surgery on his injured elbow.
Of course, this makes the Dempster acquisition from earlier in the day appear all the more savvy, as the Rangers would’ve missed Feliz’s contributions a whole lot more without the former Cubs pitcher. GM Daniels deserves a ton of credit for how he’s dealt with the adversity his first placed Rangers have experienced this season.
