According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired first baseman Gaby Sanchez and Minor League pitcher Kyle Kaminska from the Miami Marlins for outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive balance pick.
Casey McGehee and Garret Jones have split time at first base this year for the Pirates, and this move is unlikely to change that, as Sanchez’s struggles this season have seen him demoted to Triple A for the first time since 2009. He’s done well down there with a .302/.431/.491 slash line over 144 plate appearances, but that comes with the Pacific Coast League warning. If Pittsburgh decides to bring him up, he’ll probably accrue enough service time to warrant his first year of arbitration eligibility for 2013.
Hernandez, the one-time top prospect, was essentially bumped from the prospect turned suspect pile with the acquisition of Travis Snider from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Marlins likely get the very best that they could have hoped for in exchange for Sanchez, which isn’t much considering the difficulties Hernandez has in putting bat to ball. Still, a second pick in the first compensation round should suit the team well.
As for a one word summary: Meh. Or perhaps more aptly, arrgh.
