The San Diego Padres have placed rookie catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 15-day Disabled List with a strained oblique muscle.
Grandal, who was acquired from the Reds in the Mat Latos deal in mid-December, has played in 24 games since being recalled from Triple-A and has shown he can handle hitting major league pitching. He has posted a .312/.349/.597 slash line with five home runs, and was one of the Padres most consistent hitters in the month of July.
John Baker will likely assume the everyday catching duties with Eddy Rodriguez serving as his backup. Baker is no stranger to the role, appearing in 112 games for the Marlins in 2009.
