The New York Mets claimed Kelly Shoppach off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, and acquired the catcher in exchange for a player to be the named later. Shoppach had become expendable in Boston following the recent promotion of the power hitting Ryan Lavarnway.

After earning $1.35 million this season, Shoppach will become a free agent at season’s end, suggesting that the next seven weeks will be something of an up close audition in New York. Shoppach’s abilities against left-handed pitching combined with his defensive deficiencies make him a perfect candidate for platoon or back up duties.
