Ben Sheets started the final game of the BARVES season today, a start making the end of his baseball career. Sheets threw just one inning in his final start, coming out after a clean first against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Sheets was coaching kids at the end of June. Three months later, he ends his career throwing 93-96 mph w/ 2 Ks in his final inning

Though injuries slowed Sheets’ career and limited his attempts to make the most of his considerable potential, his 2004 season is one that should live throughout the ages. One of the very finest seasons of our generation, Sheets’ incredible dominance in 2004 should live longer than the memory of all the missed starts and DL trips.
Congrats, Ben. Very few ever reach the heights he touched so briefly.

Shocked to see that his masterpiece led to an 8th placed showing in Cy voting in 2004. What a travesty.
I had the exact same thought. I’m going to guess it’s because he didn’t win enough games.
But holy crap those are some absurd numbers.
That said: Randy Johnson got screwed just as badly. Maybe worse.
HOW MANY GAMES DID HE WIN?
