For reasons both synergistic and predictable, the Baseball Writers Association of America opted to release a list of “nominees” for their annual post-season baseball “awards.” Rather than make us wait until their Geocities site lurches to life on each awards day, (providing enough down-ballot angst to power a completely separate internet just for underemployed baseball fans) they are giving the MLB network some much needed content by doing it up Hollywood awards show style!

From Monday to Thursday next week, some MLB Network talent will present, breakdown, and draw-out the announcement of each league’s quasi-prestigious award winner. Rookies on Monday, managers Tuesday, Cy Young Wednesday, with blood spilling in the name of “Most Valuable Player” on Thursday.

Who are the nominees? Hit the jump for the full (and fully predictable) list as well as the official Getting Blanked selections.

Rookie of the Year

American League National League
  • Yoenis Cespedes
  • Yu Darvish
  • Mike Trout
  • Todd Frazier
  • Wade Miley
  • Bryce Harper

Official GB Selections: Mike Trout and Bryce Harper. Sure, Wade Miley had a 5 fWAR season. But…um…Bryce Harper is a teenage? That shouldn’t matter and if a stodgy beat writer made an equally specious claim on different grounds, we’d howl and wail. Yet here we are…though Harper did edge Miley at the end of the season so all Bryce everything!

Defense and base running first Mike Trout put up power numbers that dominate over those posted by Yoenis Cespedes. It almost isn’t fair.

Manager of the Year

American League National League
  • Bob Melvin
  • Buck Showalter
  • Robin Ventura
  • Bruce Bochy
  • Davey Johnson
  • Dusty Baker

Official GB Selections: Despite a strong inclination towards conscientious objection, let’s go with Melvin in the AL and Davey Johnson in the Senior Circuit.

Cy Young Award

American League National League
  • Justin Verlander
  • David Price
  • Jered Weaver
  • R.A. Dickey
  • Clayton Kershaw
  • Gio Gonzalez

Official GB Selections: Verlander is a lock in the American League after posting a nearly identical season in 2012 to the one that netted him the MVP in 2011.

The temptation to let inertia ride with another Clayton Kershaw win but let’s give ourselves over to the irresistible lure of the narrative and cast our vote for R.A. Dickey.

Most Valuable Player

American League National League
  • Mike Trout
  • Miguel Cabrera
  • Robinson Cano
  • Adrian Beltre
  • Josh Hamilton
  • Andrew McCutchen
  • Buster Posey
  • Ryan Braun
  • Yadier Molina
  • Chase Headley

Official GB Selections: Wait, does that say Josh Hamilton? As in, Josh Hamilton finished in the top 5 of MVP voting? THE OUTRAGE BEGINS ANEW! Vote Trout if you want to live.

Man, the NL field is really tight. You could reasonably vote for any of the [muffled noises, sounds of a struggle]I, uh, mean, you know, Yadier Molina [ominous dull thumping]woo…Ryan Braun put up numbers the like [heavy breathing and otherworldly screeching] FINE, DAMMIT. BUSTER POSEY. NOW LEAVE ME ALONE, I WANT TO LIVE.

And the Rest

The GM Meetings are in full swing and everything is happening! Your boy Ben “Benny Fresh” Nicholson-Smith of MLBTR is on the scene some breathless reports from the frontlines. He spoke to Andrew Friedman of the Rays about their versatility among other things. [MLBTR]

Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik insists he isn’t trading Felix Hernandez, which is precisely what somebody who WAS trading Felix Hernandez would say. [Boston Globe]

While Jack Z didn’t say it, the current rumors suggest the Mariners might be big players this winter, including making a move on Josh Hamilton! Dave Cameron goes into full rosterbation mode. [USS Mariner]

No respect, I tells ya. No respect!

Shed a tear for the plight of the poor Cardinals, who really lack catching depth behind their MVP candidate starter. Can’t say I know that feel, bro. [Viva El Birdos]

Michael Baumman of the Crashburn Alley’s favorite Phillies moment of the year is also one of my favorite baseball moments of the year. Cliff Lee forever. [Crashburn Alley]

Looks like it was concerns over Haren’s health that doomed his trade to the Cubs after all. But his agent! [HBT]

Lukewarm news for a lukewarm franchise: the Jays are moving on an unnamed middle infielder! Fingers crossed for Jeff Keppinger and the sweet release of death! (It’s probably Macier Izturis) [The Net of Sports]

Can you see Tommy John candidates coming? [Beyond the Boxscore]

The Rockies finally hired their manager. They went with Walt Weiss. Managerial experience (5A high school state champs!) finally counts for something. [Getting Blanked]

The Nats and Red Sox might end up in a bidding war for Adam Laroche, which sucks because I’m going to be writing “2009″ on all my checks for the rest of the day. [Projo]
