With the Winter Meetings set to begin Monday in Nashville, there will be no shortage of rumours from around the world of Major League Baseball. With free agents B.J. Upton (Braves), Torii Hunter (Tigers), Melky Cabrera (Blue Jays),  Hiroki Kuroda (Yankees), and Russell Martin (Pirates) off the board, Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke are set to take centre stage at the Opryland Resort and Convention Centre, in hopes of landing contracts well in excess of $100 million.

With the New York Mets set to officially announce the contract extension to third baseman David Wright this week, Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey will surely be a name we hear a lot of. Contract talks with Dickey and the Mets have reportedly not gone well, and after 40-year-old Andy Pettitte signed for one year and $12 million with the Yankees this week, Dickey’s representatives most likely changed their tune on a dollar figure, which was rumoured to be close to $30 million over two years.

If a deal can’t be reached, as many as six or seven teams would be interested in acquiring the 38-year-old knuckleballer. Jon Heyman listed the Royals and Blue Jays as possible matches, with Heyman mentioning J.P. Arencibia, Anthony Gose and Royals top prospect Wil Myers as players the Mets may have interest in.

The Texas Rangers have also been a team that has shown interest in the right-hander, according to MLB.com. Dickey pitched for the Rangers from 2001-2006 and was a first round selection of the team back in 1996.

  1. Jays trade for masterson? Young arm lost of years of control shouldn’t cost too much to get from the tribe

  2. R.A. Dickey is such an interesting player both on and off the field……

-Super cheap next year considering his 2012 performance.

-He could be amazing of another 5 years or terrible as soon as next year (one lives and dies by the knuckleball y’know).

    - His age to performance predictive value is basically unmeasurable due to his knuckl’n.

    - His rights are currently possessed by what I believe to be one of the more dysfunctional organization in baseball (Wilpon), yet the GM taking/making the offers (Alderson) is kind of the grandaddy of Value Whores, but also of selling high/early on players.

-He is a person of personal conviction (ex. the Kilimanjaro climb/Mets insurance thing last year), which would make extending him all the more less standard in procedure (I don’t think that the man is purely financially driven).

The R.A. Dickey story this off season encompasses some of the things that intrigue me about baseball.

  3. If the Twins are serious about continuing their rebuild – I have to think the Jays would be interested in Josh Willingham. He’s a guy who would be far more effective as the DH than Lind. Same agent as Josh Johnson – maybe negotiate that extension and the trade at the same time? lol.
