Thoughts? The USA lineup is pretty ridiculous. As absurd as seeing Willie Bloomquist‘s name among these giants, Stanton and Braum make up for all the Human Replacement Levels in the world. How does this batting order grab you?

  1. Rollins*
  2. Braun
  3. Wright
  4. Stanton
  5. Mauer
  6. Phillips
  7. Teixeira*
  8. Jones
  9. Lucroy

Rollins and Teixeira are switch-hitters. In this alignment, Mauer DHs and Lucroy catches. If Mauer slides behind the plate, I want Braun DHing and Zobrist or Victorino in left, both switch hitters.

The new pitch count limits make all the switch hitters extra valuable as the glut of relief pitchers will make playing matchups key in high-leverage situations. If Arencibia catches Dickey then he can hit 9th all the same as Lucroy. Willie Bloomquist can…wave a towel with aplomb from the bench? Important to note: Giancarlo Stanton gets to hit in a good lineup with guys on base. Like all the time!

The reliver-heavy pitching staff is very interesting. Kris Medlen‘s name is a delightful addition and the relief corps is strong, if a little light on strikeouts compared to the league at large. Some of these relievers will be asked to go multiple innings, we can assume. Either way, there is enough depth to allow relievers their required rest between games.

The pressure remains on for Team USA to make up for two lacklustre performances in the previous tournaments. Is this the team to win it all? The offense is spectacular but the pitching, on the surface, looks a little pedestrian. But it’s a short tournament, literally anything can happen if the middle of this order does what it should.
