Nice little Spring Training video from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times of Mariners catchers Mike Zunino and Kelly Shoppach working on their pitch blocking in Peoria. Baker has more on the drills and some other notes from M’s camp, definitely worth a click through.

Zunino is already one of the best prospects in baseball, showing a big league approach at two levels in his first professional season. Keith Law describes his receiving skills as “adequate” but a trait he can improve with big league-quality instruction, as we see above. Jason Parks lists Zunino’s pitch framing and blocking as weaknesses, echoing Law’s requirement of defensive improvement.

Feel free to apply your own baseball evaluator hat and tell us what you think of Zunino’s form.

Also: is it weird that Kelly Shoppach crouches even when he waits for his turn to block? Classic workingman move: the only time his back/knees don’t hurt is when he’s working. What a life, man.
