Cincinnati Reds v Philadelphia Phillies

Pitchers and catchers reported to camp a few days ago, but that’s not stopping us from reviewing the future look of each rotation around the majors.

We covered the National League West, now it’s time for the National League Central.

Remember, The Central Division will have a different look to it this season with the Houston Astros moving to the American League West.

Cincinnati Reds

2012 Opening Day Rotation 2013 Projected Rotation
1. Johnny Cueto: 19-9, 2.78 ERA, 3.27 FIP 1. Johnny Cueto: 14-10, 3.52 ERA, 3.62 FIP
2. Mat Latos: 14-4, 3.48 ERA, 3.85 FIP 2. Mat Latos: 15-8, 3.16 ERA, 3.38 FIP
3. Bronson Arroyo: 12-10, 3.74 ERA, 4.08 FIP 3. Bronson Arroyo: 12-12, 3.88 ERA, 4.44 FIP
4. Homer Bailey: 13-10, 3.68 ERA, 3.97 FIP 4. Homer Bailey: 12-12, 3.86 ERA, 3.76 FIP
5. Mike Leake: 8-9, 4.58 ERA, 4.42 FIP 5. Aroldis Chapman: 10-6, 3.08 ERA, 3.04 FIP

Thoughts: The Reds will have the same look rotation with four of their five starters back from 2012. The real change is with their 5th starter. Chapman will take the ball every five days instead of the ninth inning in 2013. His numbers last year were incredible (38 saves, 1.51 ERA, 1.55 FIP) but question marks still surround his role as a starter.

St. Louis Cardinals

2012 Opening Day Rotation 2013 Projected Rotation
1. Kyle Lohse: 16-3, 2.86 ERA, 3.51 FIP 1. Adam Wainwright: 14-8, 3.33 ERA, 3.13 FIP
2. Jaime Garcia: 7-7, 3.92 ERA, 2.97 FIP 2. Jaime Garcia: 12-8, 3.60 ERA, 3.27 FIP
3. Adam Wainwright: 14-13, 3.94 ERA, 3.10 FIP 3. Jake Westbrook: 9-10, 4.21 ERA, 4.08 FIP
4. Lance Lynn: 18-7, 3.78 ERA, 3.49 FIP 4. Lance Lynn: 11-9, 3.84 ERA, 3.52 FIP
5. Jake Westbrook: 13-11, 3.97 ERA, 3.80 FIP 5. Shelby Miller: 8-6, 4.01 ERA, 3.99 FIP

Thoughts: The Cardinals will open 2013 just like the 2012 season, without their ace Chris Carpenter. The team announced Carpenter would likely miss the entire season due to circulation problems in his pitching hand. The loss of Lohse, who is still a free agent, will be tough for the club to replace.

Milwaukee Brewers

2012 Opening Day Rotation 2013 Projected Rotation
1. Yovani Gallardo: 16-9, 3.66 ERA, 3.94 FIP 1. Yovani Gallardo: 13-10, 3.59 ERA, 3.44 FIP
2. Zack Greinke: 15-5, 3.48 ERA, 3.10 FIP 2. Marco Estrada: 11-9, 3.63 ERA, 3.42 FIP
3. Randy Wolf: 5-10, 5.65 ERA, 4.79 FIP 3. Mike Fiers: 12-7, 3.40 ERA, 3.35 FIP
4. Shaun Marcum: 7-4, 3.70 ERA, 4.10 FIP 4. Chris Narveson: 7-8, 4.26 ERA, 4.26 FIP
5. Chris Narveson: 1-1, 7.00 ERA, 6.21 FIP 5. Wily Peralta: 3-4, 4.66 ERA, 3.80 FIP

Thoughts: The Brewers  makeover from 2012 is a significant one. Gone are Greinke, Wolf and Marcum from the 2012 squad, and their replacements are not house hold names. Mark Rogers may earn the 5th spot if Peralta has a bad spring.

Pittsburgh Pirates

2012 Opening Day Rotation 2013 Projected Rotation
1. Erik Bedard: 7-14, 5.01 ERA, 4.07 FIP 1. A.J. Burnett: 11-13, 4.05 ERA, 4.09 FIP
2. Jeff Karstens: 5-4, 3.97 ERA, 3.32 FIP 2. Wandy Rodriguez: 11-11, 3.80 ERA, 3.79 FIP
3. James McDonald: 12-8, 4.21 ERA, 4.21 FIP 3. James McDonald: 9-10, 3.87 ERA, 4.06 FIP
4. Kevin Correia: 12-11, 4.21 ERA, 4.43 FIP 4. Jeff Karstens: 6-6, 3.86 ERA, 3.96 FIP
5. Charlie Morton: 2-6, 4.65 ERA, 4.17 FIP 5. Kyle McPherson: 8-8, 4.16 ERA, 4.08 FIP

Thoughts:

A.J. Burnett was out of the rotation to begin 2012 with an eye injury suffered during spring training, but will start 2013 as their ace. The Pirates brought in Francisco Liriano on a two year deal, but will likely start the season on the DL after a December incident. McPherson and Jeff Locke will likely battle for the final rotation spot.

Chicago Cubs

2012 Opening Day Rotation 2013 Projected Rotation
1. Ryan Dempster: 12-8, 3.38 ERA, 3.69 FIP 1. Matt Garza: 11-11, 3.68 ERA, 3.79 FIP
2. Matt Garza: 5-7, 3.91 ERA, 4.17 FIP 2. Jeff Samardzija: 10-11, 3.78 ERA, 3.77 FIP
3. Jeff Samardzija: 9-13, 3.81 ERA, 3.55 FIP 3. Edwin Jackson: 11-11, 3.98 ERA, 3.93 FIP
4. Chris Volstad: 3-12, 6.31 ERA, 5.11 FIP 4. Scott Feldman: 5-6, 4.19 ERA, 4.14 FIP
5. Paul Maholm: 13-11, 3.67 ERA, 4.00 FIP 5. Carlos Villanueva: 7-9, 4.01 ERA, 4.31 FIP

Thoughts: The Cubs made a numbers of moves in regards to their rotation, bringing in Jackson, Feldman, Villanueva, along with former Twins starter Scott Baker. Baker hopes to be ready in time to join the rotation sometime in May, and the team has Travis Wood as depth in case of injury.
