Bruce Bochy escaped the weekend without undertaking the responsibility of explaining that the reigning World Series MVP would be benched due to an issue with his weight. Pablo Sandoval was asked to check-in at a specific weight before the Giants’ Cactus League opener on Saturday, or he would be benched. Sandoval tipped the scale in his favour, apparently, as he was the only Giants player to start their first two games in the field.
According to a report from CSN’s Andrew Baggarly, Bochy was somewhat caught off guard by his third baseman’s ability to shed pounds.
“To his credit, he did,” Bochy said. “Although to be honest, I’m not sure how.”
It seems as though Bochy is not privy to the effective methods of weight loss like diet and exercise, botulism, terminal illness, and good old fashioned starvation, to name a few. I would wager that one, possibly two, of those options were methods that Sandoval explored.
Sandoval is listed at 240 lbs on Baseball-Reference, although, he appeared to play well above that weight last season. This observation is based on me being 210 lbs and 5’11″, just like Sandoval. I would look like Jennifer Garner next to the Panda. Concerns over his weight have been an ongoing issue for the Giants over the past couple of seasons, but they have not threatened his starting job since he lost it in the 2010 post season. His ability to hit baseballs and provide above average defence have made the decision to keep putting him in the lineup a rather easy one.
Baggarly added that Sandoval may actually be heavier now than he was at any point in 2010, but he has done what was asked of him by his manager. Now, if Sandoval can avoid suffering a broken hand this season then the Giants should be all set.
