The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Rafael Furcal needs Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. The timetable for his recovery could be six-to-eight months. Furcal opted to forgo the procedure last season when he was shutdown in August. Furcal hit .264/.325/.346 with a .298 wOBA and five home runs in 531 plate appearances last season.
Pete Kozma could step in to fill the void at shortstop for the Cardinals, while Ryan Jackson will get a good look this spring, too.
