Baltimore Orioles v Atlanta Braves

The New York Yankees have released outfielder Matt Diaz, who signed a minor league contract with the club this off-season.

Diaz, who recorded a .222/.280/.333 line for the Braves in 2012, struggled for most of the spring, hitting just .200/.250/.200 in 32 plate appearances with no extra-base hits. Diaz was in competition for a reserve outfield position, but became expendable after the team recently acquired both Ben Francsico and Brennan Boesch.

With Granderson out until June, the Yankees will likely field an Opening Day outfield of Boesch in left, Brett Gardner in centre and Ichiro in right.
